DUNSTAN JOCKEY CLUB RACES
—o— Day, Feb. 7. The attendance on the course was considerably larger than on the day previous, the weather was Chore favorable for outdoor pastimes, theie being no wind to raise the dust, and with but oue exception, the I events on the race card were more honestly contested, consequently the day was by lar more pleasurable, and from the ho.rty good humor that prc\ ailed, we must vote the day’s proceedings, nay, the meeting, a tucess. A good deal of speculation took place on each event, but if we arc any judge of physiognomy, thog. ntlemea of the ring, who mustered pretty strong, came off second Lest, their favorite in but few cases, claiming first honors—this we do nut regret, in fact to the contrary, as we do nut believe the presence of these gentlemen tends to improve the racing in any oue way. Individual betting is all very well, it indulged in moderately, and is harmless .n its effects, but the ring system is objecuoiiuide, and no stone should be left un. un.cd to effect a rooting out of the evil be,ore it assumes the dangerous proportions it lias in our sister colonies. Another objectionable adjunct to horse racing and race meetings is the “ Calcutta Sweep,” this to our mii.d should be curtailed We have acard it expressed by some, whokimu luoie of these matters than we profess, that so
rong as it exists will horse-racing bo a umblful pastime, as by its operation is the winner fixed. The Ball was opened with the Grand stand Handicap, fur which seven went to the post, This event was exj ecbd to be well contested, and the result proved that the w'ere not wrong in their predictionl). Opinion, however, was somewhat divided as to the favorite, the ring going in
strong for Malice, the public for Hatred aud Atlas. The start being effected, jNiiss Ennis took first position, Brunette last, this not being the cock “ Hoit” intended to fight, put the mare to it, and like a streak, passed through the team, quickly taking first place, aud making the running remarkably hot coffee for Malice, who was to win (it she could). On cnteiing the straight, Atlas aud Hatred closed on the leading pair. Brunette having done her work, gradually fell back. An interesting race now took place between Malice, Atlas, and Hatred. Malice, on being called upon to increase her speed, swerved off the course. Atlas and Hatred, neck and neck, now took the lead, and galloped in splendid stylo to within a few yards of home, when the mare, by a grand effort, got the advantage, and won by. a short length. h*or the Scurry Stakes only two started, Madam and Golden Cloud. This was a game race, and won by Madam, who was aftei wards sold by auction for 33/., Mr W. Fraser, of i Earnsoleugh, being the purchaser. The | Town Elate was a walkover for Tambourini. ; Burgundy, belonging to die same- stable, j. only bavin; been entered. For the- Hack
j Race which followed, there was a Held of : 1 eight, of whom, Golden Cloud was tbe-bcat | horse. The Consolation brought the days ! | meet to a close, and was won by Burgundy. | Saturday again brou ht a good sprinkling i i on the course, who were so ved with-two Hack races, the. Hospital race, and a private match, besides some other sports, including - wrestling, and Boxing with the gloves. For the sport and enjoyment the third day, was by far the best, and brought to a satisfactory close the seventh annual race meeting under the management of the Duustan Jockey Club. SECOND D.Y—FRIDAY.
