Your Committee, at the commencement of the year, and shortly after assuming their duties, increased the Resident Surgeon’s salary by 100/. per annum, thereby making it 250/., they deeming 150/., as resolved upon at former meeting", insufficient; and, in the mnhth of December, a bonus of 25/. was given him, in recognition of his services and to mark the Committee’s satisfaction of. the way he had conducted the during the year. The question of a further increase of salary will he brought forward during the meeting, and y..ifi* 'Committee would ask for a decided expression of opinion on that point. The servants they have pleasure in speaking well of; they have been attentive to their duties and otherwise give every sati-faction From the Treasurer’s report appended hereto, it will be seen that the Ins iturion is in the proud position of having a b dance to i!s credit (includin ■ Government subsidy due on the past quarter’s subscriptions) of 292/ 3b. Total number admitted during the year, 100 ; against 84during the year 1871. [The nature of diseases and the number of patients treated under each headi igvide report in pamphlet, copies of which may shortly be obtained on amplication Ho the Secretary ] Mr. Rankin proposed, That the reports be received and adopted, and that a vote of thanks be recorded to the outgoing Committee for the zeal evidently displayed by them during their term of office, and for the satisfactory reports jnat now read. Seconded by Mr. J. Parkes, and carried. Mr. Hazlett here vacated the Chair, but w:is immediately reinstated. The Secretary swad a letter from Dr. Ster'ing, inwhi'^ -th* oonsideiation of an increase of ?' , * "ked fi>. M-. w.xj. Simpson asked what wnstlie ariangement entered into betwe. n the Comuiittee a"d Dr. Sterling. Tho Chairman esplsinedtbat Dr Stirling had taken the management of the Institution at 150/. per annum, and that since Mi engagement an increase of 100/. p°r annua ha I beon made and a bonus of 25.'. given, thus ranking the salary equal 275/, ana that private practice with no limited radia was allowed.

Mr. Rankin said tko private practice v:i marie a very groat deal of, lie did not think t was of so great value, the Institution .ml private practise could not both hj; attends! to. He did not consider the salary mi sufficient, ami he thought if the subscribe desired the Surgeon to devote the same amount of attention to the duties of hii office as ho had for the past year, they should place him in a position to do so by increasing the salary. * Mr. W. L. Simpson said : Doubtless tti salary of the Resident Surgeon was reduced in consequence of the reluct! n of the finvernmeut subsidy from 2/. to 1/. Tuapeh and Queenstown Committees had reduc'd their expenditure, and he thought it would not do to increase the salaries without a strong reason. It would be creating a bad precedent. Mr. A. Christophers entered into the details of income and outlay, and by f\ I showed that it would he impolitic to I creose their expenditure. The past yen l receipts might he considered unexceptional!? high. Special exertions had keen niadeto wipe off a long-stanclipg'siiability. audit waa extremely Questionahfe-it' 6t>. Uflgjj amount would bo collected during th^gf 1 sent year. He was averse to increasing tti 5 salary, but would he willing, if the fund* warranted it, to give a bonus. Mr. Simpson proposed and Mr. Christ# pliers seconded- That, after hearing Treasurer’s report and statement, tin meeting do not consider the state of lb* funds warrant an increase of ss’ary. Mr A. A. Oliver proposed as an amendment, That an increase of 50/, be m» !t ’ | Seconded by Mr. Rankin. ! Tte amendment and motion were then f*

put the Meeting, resulting in the. Motion being Carried, Mr. Hazlelt said he desired to express his confidence in Dr. Sterling, add would say that great credit was due to him for the careful and economical manner in which he had conducted the institution. To have increased the Salary would have been to increase the liability. The system of giving ,'a bonus was the best, and he would be only two happy it the committee were in a* phsi • tion to support a motion in that direction. The following gentleman were Committee of management for tho ensuing year:—Jaa Hazlett, Esq.., President; W. Praaer, Esq., Vice President A. Christohers, Treasurer; G. Pacbe, Secretary; and Messrs. W. L. Simpson, B. Naylor,J. .U Cambridge, W. Auckland, J. A. Stevehs, M. Marshall and J. Holt. Messrs Deniston and Clark were elected auditors. This concluded the business of the Meeting which way brought to a close by a Vote of thanks to the 'Chair, * , VV ■
