C M.D.— The first steam ship which crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Great Britain to America was the Sirius, of seven'hundred tons burden and three hundred and twenty' horse power. She sailed from Cork on the 4th of April, 1838, arrived at New York early on the 23rd of the same month. The Sirius was followed by the Great Western, of one thousand three hundred tons burden and four hundred and sixty horse power. The Great Western left Bristol on the Bth of April, and reached New York on the 23rd, the same day as the Sirius, but some hours later, having averaged between eight and nine miles an hour.
