MATAKANUI RACE MEETING.

The first Annual Meeting of the Matakanui Jockey Club took place on the Drybread Racecourse on the 2nd and 3rd inst., and proved a most thorough success. , The weather, although warm, was pleasant, and the course fieo from the dust so.prevalent at other meets. From the very satisfactory manner in which the horses had been put together by the Handicappers some very close finishes were anticipated and what ensued proved that such ante ipations were more than realised, as some desperate finishes were made, and, in several instances, to the last stride t’ e race remained in doubt. The winner was presented with a silver cup. this was an excellent race, but the Cloud again ran a game horse, and, although Wcxf.ud had not started during the meeting, the Cloud canied hj s rider to the fore, and passed the Judge amidst great applause. Consolation Handicap of Id sovs., for all beaten horse One mile. Mr. O'Brien’s Dragon, 7st ... 1 Hazlctt’s Wexford, 7st 71b. ... 2 Dragon won easily. With this race terminated one of the most successful meetings wo have had the pleasure of attending. Great credit is duo to the Club for their spirited programme and for the manner in which it was carried on*. The booth was * credit to Messrs. Dickie and Hutchinson, who supplied their thirsly customers with a good article with cleanliness and celerity.
