ALEXANDRA RACES.
On Wednesday last, the Ist of January IS7J was the day appointed for these races, and an exceptionally line day it proved to bo, making the meeting the most pleasant wo over remember attending on the Alexandra liaco-course. The attendance of visitors was equal to the general average of former meetings, eomplotly refuting the often hoard ass“rtion that the district is done, und that population is getting less, and incontestibly proving that, the district Is as healthy as ever. The racing, if not brilliant was good, each event being well contested, in fact, to use a stereotyed expression the meeting was a success The local horses were fortunate in carrying off the highest prizes. The District Handicap for which only local horses were entered was a good race, amongst the number were two youngsters the progeny of Boebnek, the property of W. Fraser, Esq., of Earnsdough Station, as they took first and second places, Mr Fraser, who was on the course, presented to the Secretary of the meeting two guineas to be added to the stakes, 'lire booth under t lid management of Mr. M ‘Donald of the Criterion Hotel was well conducted and fairly supported throughout the meeting. On 'the evening of Wednesday, a Ball took place in the Library room in aid of the Alexandra School Funds, and was a most unqualified success, the attendance of the votaries of Terpsicoro being greater than we oversaw. The Clyde Brass Band, who gave their services on the occasion in no small degree contribut'd to the enjoyment of tiro evening, and elicited numerous expressions of-'approval. King’s Nolly ... ... 0 At the start Kathleen swerved right oil' the course, the others getting away well together, Dew'drop being in the lead. Kathleen on getting on to the course raced well, and gradually- overhauled her competitors'; at the half'mile she was-on equal terms with the lint horse, Dowd rop, from whence to home there was a capital race. At the start Madam jumped away with the lead which she kept for some distance, when Dowdrop challenged her and gave her the go bye, increasing the distance with every stride till she entered the straight run home, when, from some unaccountable cause she dropped back, letting Madam pass her and win the money. Hack Selling Race of 10 so vs. Distance, one mile. No weight under lOst. The winner to be sold for-10/. Mr. Robert’s e g-Pa ldy (M‘Gregor) 1 Roberts’s g.g Dido (Ka Kaj ... 2 Eraser’s Bay Colt ... ... ", Chappie’s Bobby Bums ~ 0 Au excellent start was effected, though Paddy and Dido soon parted company with their mates and won easily. After the race, Paddy was sold by public auction by Mr. Chappie,- and knocked down to tin’s owner for 17/. Dido was submitted, 12/. 10s being the highest oiler. Miner's Purse of 5 sovs. Distance, one mile. No weight under 10t-t. Mr. William’s Maori ... ... 1 Ohindley’s Stanley ... ... 2
King's folly was entered but did nut start. '1 liid was a good race, and was won just on the post. District Handicap of 5 aovs., 2 sees, to go to second horse. Distance, one mile. Ur. Wilkins’s b m Kathleen, 7st BH> (Holt) I Carroll’s bin Judy Callaghan, 7st4ib ... ... ... 2 Deady’s Inn Dewdrop, Bst 101!) .1 M’Guinncss’s'bg Yankey, Tsftib 0 On the fall of the ilag all got away in a heap. Kathleen and Judy soon drew to the fore, between whom the running was, The finish was most exciting, Kathleen winning hy only a head and neck. Consolation Handicap of 10 sovs. Distance, one mile. Mr. Roberts’ Dido, (Holt) 1 King’s Kelly, 2 Carroll’s Judy Callaghan, Deady’s Dewdrop, 0 Chappie’s Hobby Rums, 0 Bobby got the better of bis rider at the start and lost all chance of the race. Dido with the others, had it all his own way and won easily. Hospital Race, three quarters of a mile, the winner to be presented with a silver mounted whip, brought four to the post and was the best contest of the day. The horses’ entered wee Nelly, Yankey, Bobby Burns and Maori. From start to finish it Was a hard race, the little team keeping in heap and struggling for first place. The winning post was reached in the above order. On the following day a number of people again put in an appearance on the course when a few races, as also a lot of foot races and other games were improvised, the whole passing nfT most pleasantly.
