The late heavy rai"s up country have had the effect of causing a great rise -in the Mnlynenx, putting a complete stop to all dredging, anrl mining operations on its banks. The slight showers that have fallen in the immediate district have been very, tinvly, anil a perfect godsend to tie farmers. On Friday afternoon last, at Drybread, a little boy, aged four yews, son of Mr. John Meilor, storekeeper, was accidentally drowned in a water-race, within one hundre 1 yards of the township. An inquest wiishfld on Saturday, before E. H. drew, Esq., Coroner, and a verdict of "found' drowned, " was returned. Great Sympathy was expressed for the bereaved parents at their los«. The interment took place on Sunday aftrrnoo", A numerous concourse of mourners from the surrounding districts followed the remains to its last restin. place. The Deep L3ad, Black's ?To 3 continues to pay well. A washing up took p'ace last week wiih mist satisfactory results. The Morning Star says:—"Wo uwle--stand that Mr. T. L. Shepherd, M. P. The Installation of Officers of the Masoni “ Lodge Dunstan,’’No. 470, (5.G.,) took place cn Wednesday last. There was a largo attendance of members of the Craft. Rro. Christophers, P.M. : acted as installation Officer, and in a most earnest and able manner inducted the various officers of tho Lodge:—Bros. Siedeborg. R.W.M. ;J. Hazlett, D.M. ; J. Jones, S.M..anl Chap-1-rin ; A. D. Harvey, S.W. ; C. P. Beck, J.W. ; G. Clark, Trasurer; 0. Fache, Secretary ; M. Marshall, S D. ; J. Patterson. J.D ;W. Fache, LG.; 11. C. Moore, Tyler . Fames, Grindley, and Madigan, Stewards. Tho ceremony was most ably and imm-cs-sively conducted by Bro. Christophers, jby Bro. Fraer. The organ was presided over by Bro., the Rev. ChaplinAfter a short interval the Rev. Chaplin delivered a most impressive sermon, By invitation from tlis*3 Craft, a very numerous party assembled to enjoy a dance, to the inspiring strains of the Clyde Brass Band. Of this gathering wo can only say that it appeared to us about the most enjoyable that has been bold for some years (if ever)at Clyde. There was present every element of success, and a thorough success it was. Everyone present appeared to be therefor the one sole object—enjoyment; and, from the expressions frequently heard by us, they were by no means disappointed in their expectations; A great part of the enjoyment must bo attributed to the very admirable performance of the Clyde Brass B>nd, and it was of fi-eqmnt remark that such excellent dance music had not been heard at Clyde fur a const erable length of time. This is the more deserving of mention when we take into consideration that the Baud was formed only a few weeks since; but under an efficient leadc’-, ably assisted, and Ivy pel-severance greatly to be commended and applauded; they have arrivod in that short time to a stats of perfection which has assisted in .promoting, to a-very great degree, the pleasure of their fellow deroe ns ; and we are perfectly sure om-fair friends will fully endorse our sentimen’s when we say that the Baud is a most invaluable addition to our community. The refreshments were under the very able management of Mr. Thomas Webb, and his arrangements gave every one satisfaction. On the following (Thursday) evening, the rising geiicr-tion, from childun in arms to tho strapping lads and lasses of about fourteen years, numbering in all about one hundred, accompanied by some few of the elder folk, took possession of the Hall, and to their hearts’ content enjoyed themselves in dancing, snging, foileiis, kiss in the ring, and such like amusements, the Brass Band, with most commendable goodfeeling, giving their services. At the time of our visit, the Hall, crowded with the fairy like little figures going through the iiitricacLsuf a quadribe, presented a truly bewitching scone. Mr. Thomas Webb, the caterer fur the Masonic Ball, again displayed his abilities, and gave the youngsters such a ti eat of the good things of this world, as will cause him to be gratefully remembered by them. The journalism of Otago has received an addition in tho shape of the Morning Star, a double-demy sheet, published in Dunedin, at the very low price of one psnny. The paper contains a goodly number of advertisements a fair portion of general information, and is “got-up” in very good style. Altogether, considering its low price delivered up-country’ we tliink this publication is calculated to have some detrimental effect in the circulation of its old-established rival. Mr. Horace Bastings, M. P. 0., has been appointed a member of the Executive Council, and also Secretary for Gold-fields and Secretary for Public works. The right to occupy the Grand Stand on the Cromwell Baceconrse at tho forthcoming meeting, together wilh tho other usual privileges in connexion wUh the gathering, were sold by auction, yesterday, n ali-ing Jl4f, lls, Mr. J. C. Chappie officiated as auctioneer. From Auckland we learn that a new lode, six feet wide, has been opened in the Golden Grown Claim, which shows richer prospects than has been hitherto found on the fields. Several other claims are aking out rich stone, and altogether, mining is improving. The very unsatisfactory state of the Goldfields Act was lately exemplified before his Honor Judge Ward, in the Disri-iet Court at Orepuki. One O’Brien turned tho whole of a small creek into his race, winch discharged into another cr-ek. A conn hurt was lodged to the < ffeot that two heads of water wen- not allowed to run down the natural channel. The Warden decided in favor of the comp’aint. This was appealed from. The case hinged upon what construction should he pnt upon the words, “ for general purposes.” The evidence showed there was plenty of water fo- domestic purposes, and ultimately his Honor reve-sed the Warden’s decision, reinstating O’ Brii n. Wo are requested to draw the ariention of contractors to the advertisement inviting tenders for alterations and additions to the Grand Stand on the Dunstan Pace Course. The programme of the Dunstan Jockey Olnb for their next annual m-eting, Feb ruary, Garni 7, 1873, on referenco, will be seen to bo fully up to the mark of p evions years. The total amount to be c iinpetcd for, f 43G, is so divide I that the owners of race horses can find no fault. Minina n-ws from the Ma’aka-nii district is somi-what of a cheering character, tho supply of water being abundant, on all the races, The Blue Mountain Race Company at Tinker’s are engaged washing up. From the head nf them tail ditch od Saturday last they hail, (our informant says) nearly three hundred oz of go’cl|tbev expect, when finished, which will he in about tin ce weeks to have a farther 300 ounces, making in all, GQO ounces for a five months’ run, with five men. At Drybread the most of the companies are making prepararion for a general cleaning up for the Christmas holi days, nith good prospects,
