CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.
. —o— A special meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening the 27th instant at 7, p m. Present, —J. U. Cambridge, Esq , Mayor and Councillors Marshall, Auckland, - Feraud, Patterson and Hazlett. The Mayor stated that he had called the Council together to consider telegrams from D. L Simpson, Esq., C.E., respecting offer of his services to examine site of the proposed bridge, and give a rough estimate of the cost The telegrams were read, and areas follows “ 1, In answer to letter from the Council. l lf you wish me to report on bridge at Clyde, can do so early next week.' Reply. 2, —From Town Clerk to Mr. Simpson. * Please state proliable cost of visit, and report for the information of the Council’ 3.— 4 Cost of visitand'report on best site for bridge, 251.” It was proposed by Cr. Marshall, and seconded by Cr. Auckland, —That the offer of D. L. Simpson, Esq, CE. (by telegram).,. be accepted,—that is, conditionally upon his giving an approximate estimate of the cost of the bridge over the river at Clyde, and a written report thereon. Or. Marshall' said, that it would be necessary to have the opinion of an Engineer, as to the suitability of site, and a Report, as a basis for further action in the matter. Cr. /, uckland said it aas essential that the site should-be-reported upon by a competent, engineer, as, without ..that, nothing could he dbnd in the (natter. „ There might be difficulties in the way of erecting a bridge at the site-proposed; . - Cr. Hazlett considered the amount asked wSs reasonable ; but be thought all the information fcquired as’tq cost;. Ac. ~might be . got from the Company at the Kawarau. The Government hard assisted that Company. They had' granted a lease of several acres , of land for fourteen years and a publican’s license free, and,were expending a consider- : able amount in . making the approaches on , each sjde'of the river, No doubt they will do,thesame at.Clyde! ( - Feraud .said that, before they ( Could go, to the Oovernmenfand ask the ; aatuo terms," The Corporation' must be in a j position to .say we are prepared to build a ] bridge, when,no doubt, they would accede- ( what was .asked.
