TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —1 was not a little surprised to read in the Cromwell Argus, of the 24th inst., so very biassed an inaccurate -and account ofthe late Duftstan Spring Meeting as that penned by “ Our Special Reporterand I think it due to those genth men who worked so hard and so successfully to afford us a couple of days’ amusement that such a gross misrepresentation of facts should not be allowed to piss nncontra'icted.

In the first place, the reporter’s estimate of the number of spectators is absurd, as there could not have been less than from three to four hundred present, all of whom appeared to be perfectly satisfied with the amusement provided. The racing throughout Was good ; and the fact that, d> nng the two days, not a biii le hitch occurred, is a sufficient proof that the Stewards and other officials perfymed thsir duties conscientiously »nd

well. Indeed, to these gentlemen is to bo ascribed the success of one of the pleasantest meetings ever held on the Dunstan course.

In spite of the want of speculation complained of, 1 fear the author of the article referred to must have had a few pounds on the wrong horse, which may account for the very prejudiced view he has taken of affairs.

Possibly be may be more successful at the forthcoming Cromwell meeting; and let me conclude by expressing a hope that, should yon, Sir, see fit to despatch a reporter to that festive scene, he may, laying all local jealousies aside, give a •aithful account of the proceedings, and not think it necessary to draw on his imagination for disparaging comment on a body of gentlemen who give their sevices gratuitously for the public amusement. I am, &o. SPOUT. Black’s, Sept. 24, 1872.
