CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual Fortnightly Meeting of the Council was he'd at the Cpuncil Clumpier on Wednesday evening last, the llthinst. Present: J. U. Cambridge, Ksq., Mayor, and Councillors Feraud, Patterson, and Auckland. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The inland correspondence, consisting of letter from the Town Clerk of Christchurch respecting aitisiau wells ; from the General Government Printer, to the effect that the Government, could not supply the Corporation with the Statutes of New Zealand fiee. and end sing list of pi ices ; from Mr. W. Grindley, asking to be allowed to cart material fur anew building across the footpath, and a second letter, request! g that the culvert running through his pro pert jibe thoroughly repaired—was read and received. The outward correspondence was read and approved. Permission was granted Mr. Grindley to cart building material across the footpath. The repairing of the culvert ruining through Mr. Grindley'a property was referred to the Public Works Committee. The Committee appointed <o leport as to the formation of street at the r ar of West Ward reported they had marlce I out the line of street, aud recommended it being proceeded with. Proposed by Cr. Feraud, seconded by Cr. Marshall, and carried, That tenders be called for the formation of street at the rear ■ f West Ward ; also for the removal of lubbish from street at -ear of east Ward, and the removal of large stone thereon Cr. 'aid it was I nut bis mtcntii n to preface with any ic- j marks the proposition be bad in bis hands. | The necessity of a struetuie of the kind i was admitted on all aidt a, and bo wo Id initiate the matter by proposin.’, That this Counc 1 take the necessary stops, in c> mj liance with the Otago Municipal Corpora- j tiona Ordinance, to ilevise an ccon raieal j and profitable scheme to erect a bridge i across the Molyneux River within the ! boundary of the town of Clyde, :.nd that that the Corporation expend a sum not exceeding B,ooof. in the construction of tho said bridge, that sum of money to be raced by way of 1 an or by i suing bonds, or by guaranteeing intere.-t to any company (approved of by the Council) to un lertake and contract for the erection of the said bri ge, the said interest not to excc d seven per cent. p, r annum, for a period of not longer than twenty years, anel all profits (if any) accruing from the bridge to be equally divided between the Corporation of Civile and the company con tracing. He said, by putting the motion in its present shape, be ■lid so with the view of cresting discussion. He hoped the subject, which was one of great importance to Clyde, would bo calmly considered, and that it would be brought to a successful issue. Tlie Mayor suggested the appointment of a Sub-Committee to consider ways and m ans befoic the motion became a minute of the Council. Cr. Mar-hall said he had prepared a motion, which would possibly meet the ease. He here read a prop i»i ion, app iutiog a sub-Commit ee of four to coiisi-cr ways and means on all works of public utility. Cr. Patterson said be had pleasure in seconding Cr. Feraud’s mod n. A bridge across the Molyneux was a public uec-. s.-.ity He did not support the measure w holly in the interests of Clyde. The emir - district would be benefited, and it would have the
effect of ‘materially increasing the general prosperity.
A lengthened and somewhat acrimonious debate ensued, resulting in CT. Seconded by Cr. Patterson. Cr. Feiaud’s motion was here put, and declared canied. Cr. Fernud said, in matters of this kind, he considered the Mayor, as head <>f the Council, should collect information. The Mayor could do in< rc than a C>.mmi tee, and he would propose as an amendment, That bis Worship the Mayor ho empowered by the Council to ascertain from any duly qualified engineer the probable cost of a bridge to be constructed across the Molyneux at Clyde. This .was seconded by Cr. Auckland. Cr. I’a teraon said, he was in favor of a committee, as he thought fou" or six could do more than one. Cr Feraud here attemp ed to enter into an explanation of wlmthe intended doing whi'st silting in the Council Board, when he wa< interrupted by Cr. Marshall. Carried, The Mayor said he had already s r nt to Dunedin for prices, and would take the o liliest opportunity of carrying out the proposition. Tho Mayor said the expression of public was genera ly in favor of the Waipahe line of railway to the Teviot, as against the Tuapeka line ; that a copy of a telegram to the Honorable Captain Fraser had been handed to him, with the request that the Council should send it, and act. on the reply.
