—0 A Public Meeting was held in the Lirary Room on Tuesday evening lasi. The bßev. Joshua Jones occupied the Chair, and said the object of the meeting was to receive the report of the Committee of gentlemen who had been appointed at a previous meeting to canvass the town for subscriptions, and to decide whether the Institution 'was to be allowed to die out, or if it were to be re-opened. Mr. D. M'Connochie said, as one of the Committee, would inform the meeting of their Success—he then read a list of names promising 40/., bethought withthatamount as a start, and with economy. TV Library copld be re-opeued, and he doubter! not successfully. Mr. Hazlett said, he thought there would he no difficulty in re-opei ing the Institution, and making it both useful and an ornament to the Town, the greatest drawback former committees had had to contend with was, ihe want of a competent Librarian, jn future that difficulty would not present itself, Mr. M'Connochie having proposed to take the office, gratis for three months. 'Mr. M'Connochiesaid he had proposed to undertake the duty on account of the impecunious position of the Institution, and with the view of putting more life into it ; hut he would object, after everything was in good working order, to retain the office. A discussion ensued as to whether the meeting had the power to accept of Mr. M ‘Connochie’s offer, or if that did not rest with the Committee. The Chairman said it had not .been decided whether or not the Institution was to be re-opened, consequently they could not deal with the matter. Resolved, That that the Institution be re-opened under a Committee of Management of five. Resolved, That this meeting'.bas not the power to appoint a Librarian, and that a vote of thanks be accorded 10 Mr M'Connochie for his offer, and to the gentle men who were instrumental in collecting. Resolved, That the Committee consist of the Eer. J. Jones and Messrs. F. F,Wilson, Leninston, M'Connochie, and Auckland. The rules of the Library were brought under consideration, and it was resolved, That the Committee be empowered to revise the rules, with an injunction to keep the last rule intact, The usual vote of thanks terminated the meeting.
