CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.

—o— A meeting of the Clyde Town Council was held in the Colrncil Chambers on Wednesday , evening, the 31st of July, ult. at 8 p.m. : Present: —J. Hazlett, Esq., J.P., Mayor, and Councillors Naylor, Clark, Welsford, Hastie, and Patterson. The Mayor explained the object of the meeting, viz: — The appointment of presiding officers at the election of one Councillor for East Ward, and one for west Ward. The consideration of legal opinion of Mr. F. J. Wilson, solicitor, regarding hawking within the Municipal boundaries, also opinion regarding tbe late election of Mayor and the election of Councillors. The passing of accounts, &0., <l-c. Mr. Benjamin Naylor was appointed Presiding Officer for East. Ward, and Mr. James Patteson for West Ward. The legal opinions of Mr. Wilson were read and received. Regarding hawking, Mr. Wilson said the Council had not the power to prevent hawking within their boundaries, and advised that correspondence be entered into with the Town Clerk of Dunedin on tbe matter. The opinion relating to the legality of the la te election for Mayor was to tbe effect, —That the election was illegal: but that a decision of the Supreme Court would alone upset it. A letter was read’from the Clerk to the Clyde District School, applying for the sum of 50/, voted by'the Council towards tbe new School building. Resolved.—That the amount bo paid, also, that contract for cleaning Sunderlaudstreet, 4/. 17s. Cd. bo paid. The Town Clerk was instructed to drawattention of the Inspector of Nuisances to the accumulation of nuisances at the rear of the Town. A general discussion arose at to the late election, and tiie error that was made, and the general opinion was that, no I lame rested cn any one in particular, but arose from the fact that the Ordinances-and Acts were not in the po'.session of the Council, and it was thought that the Government, if applied to, would supply them gratis, and the Town Clerk was authorized to make the application. A vote of thanks to the Chair terminated the proceedings.
