MOUNT BENGER.
(from our correspondent.) I fear I must plead guilty to being a very remiss correspondent, but the truth is Mt Benger is so complete a sleepy hollow that there is absolutely nothing to write. It is true that a slight agitation has been raised by the persistence of the Reid government in selling large blocks of auriferous laud within this district, but most people are too disgusted with the endless signing of useless memorials to care for anything but the scraping together of sufficient cash to enable them to clear out of the country. I suppose the recent rise of the river effects your part of the world at, much as it does us. Here all the beach claims are knocked off, apparently for the season. The local dredges are all doing well, the Moa especially so, I believe another craft worked by water power will shortly be launched on this part of the river. The drawing of an Art Union in aid of the Church of England was successfully drawn last week. A lottery in aid of a church in which the principal prize is a billiard table, seems rather uncongruous, but no doubt the good end justifies the means employed. The only flotsarae and jetsame received during the late flood was a waterwheel got out of the river by the crew of Nicholson’s dredge. It is apparently new but considerably damaged. I understand the owners can have it on paying salvage expenses. A miner named Shee’ey working at Welshman’s beach, was nnluckly enough to
lose the price of several months gold, ohtained by himself and mates, somewhere near Mop, Flat. The money—about 50/, has not as yet been recovered. The daughter of our respected fellowtownsman, D", Ormond, died suddenly last Sunday, of diphtheria. The respect entertained for the parents and the regret felt at the untimely fate of a most promising aiul engaging child led to a very largo attendance at the funeral.
