Dunedin, May 23, 3 r. si. A special grant of 300/. to pay the indebtedness of the Dunstau Hospital was rejected. Strongly opposed by the Government. Lines of the Lakes, and Bradshaw voted against it—all other gold-fields’ members supported. 'The gold-fields’ committee recommend that all auriferous lauds in the Leaning Stock district be withdrawn from agricultural leasing. (Per Greville & Co.) Dunedin, May 23, 4, p.m. The Oothcnburgh’s dates are to the 16. The news is unimportant. * The no confidence debate continues. Mr. Duffy has appointed his son Law Officer over the heads of others. Great dissatisfaction is expressed at the appointment of Hoey, ex Editor of the Nation to the Secretaryship of the Victorian Agent General. A motion has been made that this ex* r•cise of patronage renders it advisable that the Governor should dismiss his advisers. Mt. Shepherd last night moved for a -special grant of 300/. tor the Dunstan Hos-i ipital, which was virtually shelved. The estimates are passed. LATEST LONDON ADVICES, Wellinfton, 4.30 a.m, Calm followed the last wool sales. The feeling is wavering and doubtful. "Should the supplies at ensuing sales turn out smaller than anticipated, there appears every probability that prices will maintain their present level, It is feared that a fall will take plase in the price of preserved meats. Present quotations:—Mutton.—Gib. tins, : 4|d. to sd. ; 41b. tins, GJd to to, 7j<l- Beef, from sd. to 7d. Strong demand. In New Zealand hemp there is a further advance of 30s. One hundred bales sold. Improvement in cleaning . enhanced the price. Sales, ex Halciono, Wellington, at from 311. 15s. to 36/. lus.
Naseby has now a [tri-weekly mail via Pa’merston. Mr. Daniels was the successfull tenderer. To owners of gardens, and persons planting, we are specially requested to draw attention to the sale of trees pt noon. The Arrow Miner’s Association at a late meeting, resolved to petition fqr the appointment of a Warden for the Arrow District. The late timely rains have had a most beneficial effect throughout the sluicing districts,, the races are all running full, and the miners are energetically pushing ahead with their operations, making up for lost time. The foundation stone of the new School house, Clyde will he laid by James Hazlett, Esq., Mayor, at 12 o’clock precisely immediately afterwards Mr. Fache will sell by Public Auction Fruit and Forest trees (as Advertised). ' From a statement laid before the Provincial Council, shewing the amounts of money voted and expended for the years 18(37-1872, the extraordinary fact is brought to light that the tAal expenditure for 1871-2 is 45,8191. 15s. sd. less than in ISG7-8, yet the item salaries is 8,7141. 3s. 3d. more in 1871-2 than in. 1807-8. The rise in the Molynenx, cousec ue it on the late heavy rains, has done si ms considerable amounts of damage in tl e v.einity of Alexdndra. The Hit or Miss Compypany at Frenchman’s Point, as also Kett and Company at the Half Mile Beach, have had to suspend operations for the time being; and the Ovens Company on the Manuberikia are completely flooded out. Altogether, fully thirty hands are thrown out of work for the nonce. A small hut, together with the whole of the moveables of a miner, at Bendigo, named M‘Donald, .was burned down during the past week, the owner was away from home at the time, and no friendly hand being nigh nothing was saved. Certain suspicious circumstances give rise to the belief that the hand of the incendiary was at work. The Police have the matter in hand, and we Lope they may hunt down their quarry. For the tradesmen’s races to be held in Dunedin to-day, the following are top weights. Hurdle Pace—Don Pedro, list.; Pilgrim, lOst. 71b. ; Kildare, lOst. Birthday Handicap—Gazelle, 9st. 101b. ; Little Nell. 9st. 41b. ; Saladin, Sst. 31bs. ; Foretop Bst. 21bs. Trotting Race—Polly, scratch, Modesty, 100 yards. Tradesmen’s Handicap—Little Nell, 9st. : Novice, Sst. 121b. Foretop, Sst. 101b. We would specially draw attention to the round of amusements prepared for to , day, the anniversary of the Queen’s birthday. Everything has been done by the committees, under whose management the whole affair is, to give satisfaction, and ; we hope their efforts will be rewarded by seeing a good attendance at the sports in day time, at the Concert in the evening, i anil the dance at a later hour. Mr. A. D. Wilson, District Surveyor' 1 has, for the past week or so, been engaged taking the levels for the Carrick Range Water Supply Company, and we are given I to understand that the portion of the pro- ■ posed race he has gone over from the gap in j the range at the head of Duffer’s Gully, to | the Royal standard gap is not only practi cable but that it will give a fall of from ten to twelve feet to the mile. 1 rom Coal Creek the source of supply to the race, Mr. Wilson did not go over, Mr. H. W. Smythies who took the first Uvels, pronounced it as having an excellent fall. Mr. Macassey presented a petition to the Provincial Council, signed by eight hundred and twenty seven Chinese, praying for the removal of Mr. Warden Beetham, from Queenstown. The matter his created quite a sensation in the Lake District, and, from all quarters, expressions of opinion most favorable to Mr. Beetham, are being made. A public meeting was held at Queenstown, at which the whole of tlie leading men of the district put in an appearance and took an active part. It was hiuted that the signatures were those of new Chums who had never seen the district. The meeting resolved that memorials from both Europeans and Chinese in favor of Mr. Beetham, be forwarded to the Provincial Council.
