MR. SHEPHERD’S MEETING.
—°— i (TO THE EDITOR OP THE DUNBTAN TIMES,) Sir, f-In your report of my meeting you report me -as having said that 1 hoped that, in- future,- a better understanding wouldexist between the electors and myself. This statement iB, to use a mild word, "incorrect," as I never used such words ; and I may add, that my relations with the electors have always been of the most satisfactory character. The report, in almost every other particular, either misrepresents what 1 said or fails to convey what I really intended. I therefore trust that your readers will not be misled by it. I am, &c, THOMAS L. SHEPHERD. Dunedin, May 6, 1872. [On comparing our notes taken at the meeting withour published report we find it to be literally correct. :We are sorry Mr. Shepherd should be guilty of such brusqiierii, "to use a mild word," as to accuse us of -reporting him incorrectly. What Mr. Shepherd "intended" we were unable to report; and all we could do was to give a condensed report of what he said. Had Mr. Shepherd favored us with a copy of his " intended" speech, as he did a contemporary, our report, if not quite so truthful, [might have been more pleasing to the honorable gentleman. -Ed. D.T.]
