BAND OF HOPE ENTERTAINMENT

0 — The third entertainment under the management of the above Society was given in the Town Hall, Clyde, on Friday evening last, in aid of the funds of the Dunstan District Hospital, and was a merited success. The programme was a very good one, and the chorusses, glees, songs, readings and recitations were each most creditably given, ami evidence of the appreciation of the audience was meted .£ vociferous applaudiugs. The Chair was occupied by the Rev. J. Jones, who opened the proceedings by an introductory address on the benefits to he derived from total abstinence.

Ihe entertainment opened with an overture by Messrs. Campbell ami Harvey on the piano-forte and viohn, of which, too much cannot be said, its rendering being perfect. C'horusses, songs, readings, and recitations followed in due order, and each piece was received in a manner illustrative of the pleasure' derived by the audience, proving that no pains had been spared by the performers in their preparation. Mr. W. lies, in each part of the programme played in a most masterly manner some delightful airs on the English concertina, which were received with uproarious applause. As usual, when any performer excels himself, and completely gams the ear of hi 3 audience, noisy demonstrations of pleasure are indulged in. On this occasion there was no exception, and some of the gamins, to the disgust of the majority of the audience showed their pleasure in whistling. This kind of applause, on several occasions, the presiding Chairman has. reprobated. We cannot but agree with the remarks made by the Chairman on Friday night last, in which be again referred to this objectionable proceeding, and should hope that at all future entertainments, the "whistle " will be left at home. The third part of the entertainment consisted of two very good set scenes by Mr. Thomas Webb, who, on this occasion excelled himself in the decorative art. The entertainment concluded with a dance, which was carried on with great spirit till an early hour. Mr. White here accompanied by the violin, whose services were warmly appreciated.
