A petition with two thousand signatures against the Moa Flat "sale has been forwarded to the Governor from Roxburgh. Mr. Tolmie moves the reply to the address. Smith; late the Editor of the Australasian is lecturing to_ large audiences on spiritualism. M’‘. Mouat has been admitted as a Barrister. The Mayord conference yesterday resolved that the proposition of the Government be accepted, contingent on agrement that that portion of the oiler relating to main roads apply to Dunedin only. The Councils at Wellington and Nelson opened yesterday. The Superintendent speaks hopefully of the improved financial condition. At Auckland Mrs. Norman’s application to administer to the estate of the late Mr. Norman, proprietor of the United Service Hotel, some time owner of the Criterion, was opposed by Jones, his son in law. An extraordinary conflicting evidence, second only to the Tichborne case. Jones identifies the applicant as Norman’s barmaid when in Dunedin, and that his wife is in London. The applicant swears that she is the wife, and never :was in Dunedin. The Chief Justice refused to grant administration. The estate is now vested in the hands of the Registrar till the applicant proves her identity. The Kaiapoi railway was opened yestero day. Heavy floods have occurred in the Timarn district, and a good deal of property destroyed. George Bradford was drowned in attempting to cross the Orari river. ■ A suspension bridge is proposed to be built at Black’s. The inaugural address last night was a great success. The address to the reply was adopted. Without discussion the address was adopted, but recommending the bringing of the forest trees encouragement Act into force. The Government will not recede from their proposal to endow Municipalities, conditionally that they keep up the main roads, hut agree to put (.them in efficient repair first, and to favorably consider any case of special hardship. The Conference agrees to the proposalIn the Wellington Provincial Council, Mr. Bunny said the the Executive declin to propose a reply to the address, as it is desirable that the Council should give up apeing a superior Legislature and that it will set itself immediately to the practical work of the session. Auckland. Accounts from the Gold-fields at tho upper Thames confirm the reported richness. Native Chiefs ask the Superintendent to send on a respectable party. The Norman case is causing a great amount of sensation. In the case “Jones v. Jones,” Albert Griffiths swears that the applicant is Mrs. Robertson. Norman’s daughter swears to the contrary. Four other witnesses depose that she is Mrs. Norman, The Albion’s dates are up to the 24th ultimo. Abrahams [and his wife have been acquitted. Great dissatisfaction is expressed. A Bill has been introduced into Parliament to authorise street tramways in Melbourne. Auckland telegrams state that, according to the terms of tho Hon. J. Vogeljs contract, Victoria pays, 42,500/., on condition that the inward mail steamer proceeded from Auckland to Melbourne ; the outward steamers proceeding from Melbourne to San Francisco direct, the New Zealand outward mail being conveyed by branch steamer ■; or Victoria contributes 27,500/. on condition that the steamers call at New Zealand ports both ways. It is understood that the New Zealand subsidy of 50,000/. be reduced to the extent of half the Victorian subsidy.
