CARRICTON.
(FROM OUR COP. RESPOND ENT.) Janua'-y IG, The most interesting fact in the past week’s hisfoiy has been the traeii g • f.the “ Hea-t of 0 k ” reef into the “Duke of Cmnb Hand ” boundary. Trending to the west, i‘ sheers clear of the “Rob Roy" ■entirely cutting across SmitVs-gully and Pipeclay. Whether this is actua'ly the reef in the “ Hear' of Oik” ora continuation of the “ Elizabeth ” apn-ars a matteof doubt in some minis, but not so i i the opinion of your “ correspond nt.” There is a considerable «idth—three or four feet, of payable s f one and nibble in the ground opene I in the “ Duko” and ov t two p nny weigh's to the di-di has bean obtained. Tlrs p-os *cct being obtained on the north ■cro boundary of the “ 'ak” must, an i undoubtedly will advance the va'ue of the “ Oak” scrip. It should now he far above par. Thera has been a couple of rarst inferior •emshings in two roadside claims adjoining the “Caledonian", not enough of a vield to pay for crushing. It seems a most sin on bar thing that men should care about crtisbm ' stone and rubble contahiing so srna'l a quantity -if gold. Expertentia docet eviden'ly in r eling ma'tevs fails t > 'each pru l ence. Have vou or your rea ’er.s ever bea-d of Orecn’s R ef, it is a*- the bend of Adams’s Gully, above the “ Roya' Standard ’ somewhere in the ol' iids—far higher than your servant would venture to l.w.el’—-well, all kinds of rumors ar - afloat as to the richutss of the-st n.’ discovered in it, and rumor tint muUifilld tongued j ole whose ears and mouth are always open, stages through one human agent that seventeen grains to the dish have been obtained, an then employing another vehicle for its communication states seventeen p mnyweights. Should ■you have any doubt, turn the pennyweights into ounces for your sat sfaCtim, ■ and then perhaps he a- near the mark. Anyhow the reef looks well, and the truth 111 tell you like the “drawer,” Anon Sir ! Anon ! The “Nil Dcsperandum” Company a>e busy drivin ; another tunnel on the northern boundary of their claim. They wish evidently to prove their claim atbo'hemls. They talk of cutting a road up the Pipeclay spur, to enable them to bring up machinery and coal for the working of their claim. North of them the “ Robert Buns” purpose sinking on the reef. Southy&rds the “ I ioldon Gate” Company having amalgamated with the “ Entcrp; isu” have applied for a lease, and have commenced driving a tunnel to cut the reef at a low level.
En passant, I may remark, a memorial is going round to o 'pose tlie application. T,easing “ smells rank i i the in ning nostril —though why I cannot say or conceive-as a quartz reef to a si g'e indivi mil, who imy not he a e.apbalist is about as much good as a white elephant. Five stampers wo kin r at the “Oak”, and fou'- a‘ the “ Kliz ihotlx” tell a sad tale for water supply. Coal Creek must come here, aid the sooner the letter. I hav not yet sc n the prospectus, if i-simd, and shall reserve my say on it and the published report till next i sue. I hear a lot to say on this head an I prnmo f e r s scrip, hut want to he quite au fad before 1 commence my strictures. Hardin<_B hotel is auctual’y commenced. I hear it is too near the road at present—anil further trouble and delay will 'ensue, f/uiensabe. How would asite at “ Green’s” suit. Jam. 23. No letter to han I last week I hear you exclaim, well, get us a postal service and a Post-office here ; we may then perhaps receive our letters an I paners in their regular order, and yi.ur correspondent nviy hav ■ a chance of his communications being received with something like regularity and despatch. . Most of our hill side inhabitants have been suflering from water on the brain during the past week. The particular cause of the infliction was the Coal Creek water race Company. Some clear seeing people on the Nevis it appears, wherever that may he. ha 1 some mouth’ago obtains 1 a grant of this water, which the nr suit Coal Oe k C >rnn viy have li v 1 t-ans'erre.d *o ‘hemsolves and various rumors have been afloat as to the amount of nromo'ors mterest the pmmovers had allowed to ih -nisei cs. It was averted that 30001 was to bathe modes interest rot dned for prom 'ion, -nd preliminaries, such as making a cnrl •>. survey, ta't-’n ' about the matter, i-nbbi i some extra win keys’ on I hj >'di-ig 1 mg an 1 useless e immittce meetings. A thi-d of the amount lioweve l ’, has suffic’d, and Cna l Creek Water Simply Scheme will be flooed with only 1000/. dead scrip, Th re happens, I a n inform "I, to be twenty promoters who receive first 50/ in paid up shores apiece. Of course such a small iiPe-est will not in the least aff ict the va’ue of the property — hut mav induce outsiders nnacqu.r’h f ed with the dis'rict to view the matter in a suspicious li lit. It may he bel 1, and rightly too, that a party of speculators who obtain from the crown, almost in fee simple, a water privilege of a valuable character for their benefit, must either have a very poor opinion of the value of the right conceded to them, ora very pressing imgencv to obtain property of the value of fifty pounds.
Should it bo asserted that personal nggrandisemmt is injured in the consideration of the wa‘er supply, there would b e no protest whatever for promoters n>t e ,.nj,f a t all, other than the actual costs incurred in nre liminary expenses If the right, is not wor‘h more than 1000/. beside ‘be cost of construction, the public can hardly ’-e supposed to subscribe readily towards it, h'wcver glowing the inducements h-dd out, while, if pu dicbmeStbe con i lercd, and benevolence •enters into consideration, it seems mean and paltry for the Promoters to filch 50/. a niece under the convenient cloak of the public weal It smacks of little Psdiingion, our
horse views, and timidity in finance. The scheme is sound however, and the property can well bear the burden if the prom ters actually need tfie scrip. The survey is evidently of a very embryonic character, so it were idle to speculate on the cost, or any means of ove-coming the natural difficulties in the course of the race. I rom the most trustwor’hy information I can obtain, the race will <»dy he frozen up some thr«e months during the twelve. It is inten led to apply f r the Government suhsi !y of one third of the cost of con strncti m, and it will he a curious thing to narrowly wa'ch how the promoters interest will mn along side of G ivemraent aid, and whether the s-curpy demnnded by the min-i-ter will b i on! v he'd on the pat con-s'ruct-d by sm-h aid, or on the nr >per‘v generally'. The aid offered can only include “one third of the estimated cost of the wnrki to be constructed.” a-d can in no tv*is n recognise r»rorao*in»i or promote** 3 interest. I sincero'y wish the race and pg promo'ers hon voyage. Tile result of crushings from the Star am 1 the Oak I wi'l endeavor to send vou cor rectly by telegram. They will cert dn'v lend an i np-tns to the R-y ig ß The want of water for their batw v w ill bo ■ vercom ■ h : s week, when t n head of stamps will disnosc of from nine y to on hundred ’ons ver w-ek. I am bap: y to say the Elizabeth islooking up an 1 I have every -eas >n 'o bel'eve will confirm the good character I have ac frequently given the claim. It has only water to drive four head of stampers, while this limited sup dy is muddy, and not calculated to save fine gold. Under present managem nt f hiscl dm will assumeja n»w eharae'er. The Black Horse I hear is abandoned Men as a rule will not believe in natures regularity until they are compete 1. I .hear the Cdedonian and New Royal ■ Standard a - e both on ■ ood stone, but ! tbe batteries often by their returns do away yvith the illusions engendered by inexperience. Affairs at the “ Duke" are in the same position as when I lad wrote. In Pipeclay, the “Golden Gate” Company are busy driving their tunnel night and day ; they calculate r n cutting their reef about the end of February. The Nil Desperandum and Robert Bums are driving a joint tunnel to test the reef ■on the north end ot the Nil Desperandum claim, and will probably do so. They purpose having a trial crushing about the same time during the current month. Higher up the same spur, the John Bull Company intend paddooking out their flat leader in a fa-e, a id piling stone ready for crushing at the first chance. Adjoining the “ John' Bull” is a claim callel the “Marquis of Lome, ” which has also this week ohtaine 1 some good stone and goot prospects. A large portion of this spur promises to become valuable property. The Old Stan lard claim is being opened for re-working. I hear of another reef he ng found in Paddy’s-gully—but until you send me up a horse or a ba loon, I must 1< ave those outlying districts unvisi+pd. Now that the seas nof the n rthwest winds are over we are enjoying splendid wen'her. Fine days, about 100 deg-ecs in Hie sun, and cool refreshing nijh's. The windy season seems pasty and summer-time come. Sh<'cp have pot shome, and men thankful thev are away from the hum of fellows, divest themselves of as much clothing as possilde, one, look for shelter from the sun an 1 cooling di inks. Green’s reef-vt the top of AdaraVrullv, is I.iok'n we’l, as mush as a mnnyvei ;ht to the d'sh has been obtains I, while the three leaders they have found, opnear to be converging together. The Bo -d vr Chief I hear is going to have ano her trial—its slumholders cons'dering the rich stone thev have obt.ai -o I'n tbe'r 'ea I>v a (f , r ,] s indications of permanent weal'h below. The Accli nifization .Societies should be impressed with the fact that mbvng nro-ims-s to be carri-d on at high elevations in this treeless Scotch settlement, and shoul entertain propns>ls. -nd g'vo info-, ma'ion as to what ti nbev can ’ e crown in these elevated localities. Birch, the h.ar. 'test of our native woods, crows some 3,4f>0 feet above the sea level—but we want a timber to p'nnt in the sheßered nno'-s of our mountain’, at a higher clevaion than this, so that for quartz mining ■mip ses. t'mb'T can he grown in (•■■nvcn ent localities to meat, the future wants o' 'V country. O'he - kinds of timber, the Conferva in California grow to the snow ’ we'—that is pr •cise'y what wo want here '' r ° Are g dng to -et 'ho water—the timber should follow in its wake.
