DUNSTAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL.
The usual ninthly meeting of the Committee was held in the Public Library, on Monday evening, the 6th inst. Present: J. Hazlett, Esq., in the chair, and Messrs. Grindley, Christophers, Parks, Marshall, Holt, Patterson. Naylor, Beck, Fache, Cambridge, Wellsford, and Barlow (Secretary). The minutes of the last monthly meeting and of special meeting (held on the 10th of October) were read and confirmed. Inward correspondence, in all six letters, including letters from J. Preshaw, Esq., Cromwell, and W. Pyle, Esq., St. Bathan's, enclosing 14/. 14s. and 10?. 10s. respectively, was read and received. Outward correspondence (thirteen letters) was read and approved. The Visiting Committee’s report No. 1 w-as read and adopted. The Visiting Committee's report No. 2, in consequence of the accounts fr the month not being in, was not considered. Eesolvcd, That the Visiting Committee be empowered to examine the accounts for the past month, and pass the same for payment. The Treasurer reported for the month, ; from paying patients, The report was received and adopted. Proposed by Mr. Christophers, seconded by Mr. Marshall, That, considering the ■Government officers whose salaries were •reduced received three months’ notice, this Committee are of opinion that the conduct of the Government and Council in diminishing the Hospital subsidy to 1?. to 1?. as from the Ist of May, and thus making it retrospective, is, towards charitable institutions, illiberal, and has caused this Hospital to be involved in a debt of about 300?, as it was only in June last that any reduction was mooted in the Provincial Council, even then the Committee could not immediately retrench, owing to contracts for supplies being let, and three months’ notice of any reduction having to be given to officers and servants as agreed upon.—That this be represented to the Government, and that they be asked for a special grant in favor of the funds of the Institution, or for the J»ymant of the old rate of subsidy to the ead of September last.—That the Wakatip and Tuapeka Hospital Committees be requested to co-operate with this Committee in urging this just claim on the Government. Carried. Resolved—That the Committees of the Wakatip ond Tuapeka hospitals be conunu-
nicated with, with the view to the appointment of a joint deputation to wait on the Government to obtain the objeois of the foregoing resolution. The Resident Surgeon reported patients in the house beginning of the month, 11; admitted during the mouth, !i ; discharged, 6 ; remaining in house, 3. The patients admitted were from M‘Lean’s station, 1; Tinker's, 1 ; Dunedin, 1. Mr. S. Welsford was appointed a member of the Visiting Committee. Mr. Patterson in accordance with notice of motion, moved—That the resolution fixing the salary of future Resident Surgeons at 250/. per year with private practice be rescinded; seconded by Mr, Holt, and carried. Proposed by Mr. Patterson—That the salary of future Resident Surgeons be 400/J without private practice. Seconded by Mr Holt. Mr. Patterson said he was strongly o f opinion that the Hospital can only be properly attended to, when the su'geon devotes his whole time to it, hence lie was induced to bring forward his motions, and lie hoped the Committee would support him. As an amendment Mr. Facho moved— That advertisements be inserted in such papers as the Committee may hereafter decide upon inviting applications for the office of Surgeon to the Duustan Hospital, Salary, 150/. per annum and dwelling house, with private practice. Amendment, No. 2, by Mr. Grindley— That the salary be 250/. per annum, and dwelling house, with private practice, and that the Surgeon I e compelled to reside in the Surgeon’s residence. Amendment No. 3, by Mr. Welsford, That the salary be 200/. per annum, with dwelling-house and private practice. After a lengthy discussion, Mr. Fache’s amendment was carried. A vote of thanks to the chair teiminated the meeting.
