ALEXANDRA.
(BY OUR CORRESPONDENT.) M The excitement of the week has been the satisfactory returns from the crushing of a few tons of stone and mulloch at Conroy’s ; the actual figures as near as I can get at them, are as follows, about twelve tons of mulloch or casing l and five tons of stone, for a yield of forty-seven ounces of gold. That is somewhat about the amount obtained, bat there appears to have’ been a deal of carelessness and slovenliness exhibited in the cleaning up, or the cake would have been larger. Tbe gold is of a rich dark color, and I reckon it will smelt well. A meeting of the shareholders took place on Monday last, when it was decided to dispense with the services of the late manager, and Mr. Robert Reid, late of Bendigo, was appointed in hs stead ; from this gentleman’s wide experience in quartz mining, and with every‘detail in the extraction of the pr cious metal, there is no question but that the Company have made a very happy selection, and it is to be hoped the reef will continue to yield as well as the first crushing. The six sharehol 'ers, four of whom are miners, the two others bu- | siness people, one a resident of Alexandra, the o' her of Clyde, deserve to reap a rich reward, as throughout the two' year s tbe reef hj s been in their hands, they have persistently ba'tled with every obstacle, and have with no niggard hja n d expende ! a large sum of money i testing i's resources. On Monday night'last it blew a perfect ; hurricane, and lam sorry to say, a great deal of damage wav done, nothing was sacred to the irreverent monster as he rnl’ed and roared sweeping everything before him. Several of the water-races have suffered by the loss of flmning, and on the Frenchman’s Beach, the Hit or Miss Companv had their large water-wheel blown down and smashed into atoms. The Ovens Company I hear have been unsuccessful in their attempt to raise water by means of a self acting pump they have lately bad made ; 'he principle is the auxiliary syphon, the self same thing as was used in the River Yarra some years ;e"o, when that river was deepened, for the purpose of wharf accomodation. The cause of failure, I think is to be traced to several causes, but as my time and space are now both limited, I will leave the subject till next week, when I will give my views at some length. 9S- ■ -^-re-y-wwn.-rau,^..,
