At a Caucus of Otago members, it was agreed l>y a majority of eight members to eeven to introduce a land bill, The goM-fiolds' Committee have reported against the reduction of the gold export duty. Buchanan's amendmens on the wife's sister marriage Bill, by a majority of one, was committed for six months. The Educational Bill under debate, and generally approved of. The discussion confined to details. Mr. Haughton stated that Catholics were satisfied, except as tn the constitution of Boards and supervision. Swanston on the other hand denied that Catholics were averse to National Education, and that the movement was solely against the Clergy. Judge Johnston in his charge to the Wellington grand jury spoke strongly in favor of Denominational education. The Bishop and Clergy of the Church of England, Otago, petition in iho same di. rection. Dunedin. Heichelt's trial proceeds' slowly. No new evidence of any consequonco pro iuced. Tho for tho prosecution not vet closed. The Southern Escort brought d0wn4222 ounces of gold. Tho Northern has not yet arrived.. There is no signs of tho Mail.
CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL. The usual monthly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambcron Wednesday evening, the 6th September. Present: J. Hazlett, Esq., J.P., Mayor, and Councillors Hastie, Clark, Welsford, Brough, Naylor, and Patterson. The minutes of last monthly meeting, and of meetings held on the 12th, 14th, and 15th of August, were read and confirmed. Inward corespondence, as follows, was read and received:— 1. Prom Mr. Alexander (tie Miss Edith Palmerston) asking that the rent of hall be , reduced. 2. From constable Boyd, resigning the office of Inspector of Nuisances. 4. From Lawrence Town Council accompanying copy of petition on the subject of the abolition of Provincialism. Resolved on the motion of Councillor Brough, That the resignation of Constable Boyd, as Inspect r of Nuisances be received and that Inspector Percy be requested to recommend the appointment of Conetable Carrol to the office in question. Proposed by Councillor Brough. That W. W. Wilson be requested to at once draft a petition for signature by the Council and forwarded to Wellington, praying for the abolition of Provincialism, and that he also prepare another petition for general signature to bo forwarded to Wellington also. Seconded by Councillor Clark and carried. Resolved, That a committee consisting of the Mayor and the finance committee be appointed to confer with Mr. W. W. Wilson relative to the petitions, and to regulate the despatching of same to Wellington. Accounts amounting to 321. 3s. lOd. were parsed for payment. The Town Clerk was instructed to take all necessary steps to obtain paymeat of all outstanding rates. Resolved on the motion of Councillor Patterson, That the Mayor take action in preventing any more licenses being granted for depasturing sheep on the Clyde commonage.
