VICTORIA. Sandhurst is still the centre of attraction for mining speculators. The greatest excitement still pervades the business of the share market. Transactions are more nu- ; merous than ever, and an immense amount of money is continually changing hands ; and stocks almost all over the district are constantly coming into notice that have lain dormant for many months past. Sandhurst has been extending its capital as far as the Castlemaine gold-fields of late, and several new and very promising companies have been launched. On the Wattle flat, some Bendigo men have secured three or four leases, with welltimbered shafts and a crushing plant, which they intend to form into a company of twenty-four thousand shares. The great Learmouth claim has also been purchased by Sandhurst capital. The new company taking up three quarters of a mile of ground along the Hue of reef. There is an immense reef being let on tribute at 50 per cent., and applications for more have been refused. The former proprietor seems to have taken out strips of stone only here and there, but the present company intend taking all before them. At Bal'arat mining matters are steadily progressing. Improved returns and prospects are given by the Leviathan, the Prince of Wales, the St. George and Band, the Band and Albion Consols, Winter's Freehold, Albion Consols, and Bonshaw companies. The reputed discovery on Ballarat E.ist of lavge deposits of rich wash dirt has been fully confirmed by careful search, and it is now suggested that all, or nearly all the old ground will pay for reworking. A memorial, emanating from the Sandhurst and Ballarat miners has been adopted; protesting against the proposed bill to consolidate and amend the Law relating to mining companies. The principal plea being that; —" The new bill, if it becomes law will be discouraging and disastrous to hnnesc investors, and would he little or no hindrance to the malpractices of unscrupulous men. A lad named Harry Taylor, was searching for gold in a claim near Victoria Cull}', a few miles north of Bedbank, after many months of fruitless toil has been rewarded by the une;irthing of a splendid nugget of gold, weighing upwards of four pound, and valued at 2007. A considerable quantity of oil has been made from the olives planted some years since at Rockbear—oil of a very good quality. The Bendigo Jockey Club, at a meeting held on the 21st ult., decided upon fixing date of their Spring Meeting for the 22nd and 23rd of November. The following gentlemen were elected stewards for the season Messrs. C. Kelly, A. Thunder, W. G Jackson, J. N. Clegg, and F. T. James. The prog amme will be similar to that of last year, with the exceptions that the added money in the Handicap is increased to 125/. and in the Cup to 175/. ; the District Plate is also increased to 50/. The nominations take place on the 2-ith October,- and to pre vent any idea of local favoritism the club have resolved to appoint Mr. E. T. Bernard handicapper. SYDNEY. His Excellency the Governor -opened the Agricu'tural Society's Exhibition' in the presence of alarge and influential assemblage. The Chamber of Commerce have resolved to urge the Government to provide dock accommodation for the largest-sized war vessels Mr. Winch has advertised hi 3 entire stud for sale. An attempt has been made to assassinate Mr. Quilty, of Tumut. A shot was fired through the window, and the ball lodged in his head. The wound is not likely to prove fatal, but the shot has not yet been extracted. The townspeople offer a reward of 2001. for the apprehension and conviction of the perpetrator of the murderous outrage. A wool ship loads this season for California direct. From Sydney. . ADELAIDE. In the Legislative Assembly. Mr. Boucaut carried, an amendment in the Land bill against the Government limiting the time for the selection of land on credit to six months, instead of two years, a3 proposed in the bill. , - The Hunt Club Steeplechase is fixed for the 14th October. Lieutenant Colonel Sankey has commenced an examination of Adelaide Plains, fro m the Sturt to Gawler, with a view of ascertaining tho nature and extent of the water supply, and reporting on tho possibility of its baing applied to irrigation.
