CROMWELL.

(from OUR correspondent,)

The only subject causing any excitement in Cuoihwell at presentis the Provincial election. It is very difficult to decide between the there candidates nominated. Mr. Marsh is the oldest resident, but he has not got any one to come forward and speak for him as Mr. Hickey had. At the meeting of the last named candidate held in Cromwell, the spirit moved Mr. Bas tings to stand up and declare that Mr, Hickey was well known to him, and that the electors of the Kawarau district could not do better than return him, (Mr. Hickey) as their representative in the Council. It is possible that we may ho content to take a member upon Mr. Bastings’ recommendation. It is also possible that we may not. A good number of voters seem to think that Mi-. Hughes’ experience in the Council renders him the fittest man, but I doubt whether he will get many votes among the miners.

From the Garrick Range, news comes that a good reef has been struck upon the Phoenix claim, but as a setoff'against that, one other reef, (1 suppress the name) is turning out very badly. The No. 1, north of the Elizabeth, seems to be still turning out good stuff, but there will be no certainty about it until a good many tons are put through the crushing machine. I am'happy to be able to state that the “ Royal Standard ” machine is nowworkirig well, and whatever hour of the night or day one happens to pass, the machine is heard merrily rapping at the quartz.
