CLYDE GOLD ROBBERY.

(To The Editor of the Dunstan Times.) Sir : Having observed in your columns of last week, that Mr. Strode was upon .the point of making enquiries into the distribution of the reward offered by the Government, for the recovery of the property, I won d wish to make a few remarks upon the subject In the first place it should be considered that the police force (particularly M‘Garni, Smith and Hunt) who took such an active part in the recovery of same, who found the first link of evidence, ard so successfully followed up the affair, so as to complete the chain should not be overlooked.

Some may say, these men were only doing their duty, yet 1 think they did far more. They worked by night and day, travelled tremendous distances backwards ■and forwards, paid heavy -expenses out of their own pockets to collect information, (and we all know information is not got without pay) and used every energy of .mind and body to complete that train of evidence, which must have given such unbounded satisfaction to both Government and Banks. And it the Government do not even handsomely recognize such acts as this from their servants, how can they in similar cases, ever expect men to undergo such anxiety, labor and expense, as these men prove themselves to have done. At the time the affair took plase, and even after success, these men were never even officially or publicly thanked. These are the parties who I consider deserve handsome remuneration, and not Mr. Rennie, who if-paid at all, will approve of the pan so much, that he perhaps may like to try his hand again. AN OBSERVER OF PASSING EVENTS.
