BENDIGO GULLY.

(from our own correspondent. Jan. 19, 1870. Some more excitement was created last week by the announcement of the discovery of a new quartz reef. The discovery was made by the men engaged in cutting the water yace for the Alta Company, who immediately they struck it, covered it carefully up, and on their contract being completed, the two tinders, Messrs Douglas and Inkester applied fora prospecting claim,— leaving out their two mates This will most certainly lead to a law-suit and although I don’t wish to offer an opinion on the matter, 1 think it very hard lines oh the men left out. 1 have seen some of the stone and it showed a splendid lot of gold. Mr. Reid of the Alta Company crushed a piece weighing about two ounces which yielded something over a pennyweight of rather rough gold. The Cromwell Company washed up yesterday and have started crushing from the Golden Link. Work is still going on in the second lease and in three of the shafts a good reef is seen. The Colelough Company are busy filling the paddock at the mill with quartz. Everything is ready for a start, which is to take place to-day. I am sorry to say that those members of the community fond of imbibing on the cheap will not get a splash out of this, as there is not going to be a christening.

The Alta Company’s mill is nearly completed, and crushing is expected to commence to-morrow. The reef is still looking well, and is of a good thickness.

Richmond and Muir’s old claim was taken up about six weeks ago by two working men It is looking very well and turning out Very good stone.
