ALEXANDRA SPORTS.
Despite the many counteracting influences the sports which took place on the public reserve Alexandra on the26th and 27th December last were exceedingly successful. The intense heat of the weather and the dust rendered it rather disagreeable for both spectators and competitors, but did not appear to have an further effect than increasing the demand for cooling drinks at the refreshment booth. Mr. hj. G. Eyan of the Bendigo Hotel provided the refreshments and seemed to give universal satis faction. The following is a list of the various contests and the names of the prizetakers.
FIRST DAY, Foot race, 250 yards, seven entries.— M'Naughton, I;W. Keenan, 2 ;William Jenkins, 3. Qupitiijg. twelve entries.—James Simmomls, 1 ; Andrew Britton, 2. Tilting, eight entries.—Won byAdamKing with four rings. Foot race for youths, thirteen competitors. —John Robertson, 1 ; Alexander Ro hertson, 2 ; William Telford, 3. Vaulting with the pole, three entries.— Won by J Simmonds after a most severe contest with W. Vause, the height attained being seven feet seven inches. Putt'ng the stone, Scotch style, four entries.—J. Gartley was declared the winner at twenty feet ten inches ; W. Regan taking second prize at miueteen feet two inches. Walking race of one mile,’five entries.— won by T. M ‘Elligott, S. Wilkins making a good second. Wrestling, Irish style, four entries. —Winner of the first prize, ,1. M'Derraott, and of the second, William Keenan. Sack Race for boys under fourteen years of age.—Telford, I ; Jones, 2. Standing high leap, four entries. - -In this jump, Messrs Simmonds and Yause again contested for superiority, but the result of the trial ended in favor of Vause. 'Catching the greasy pig wound up the days proceedings.—William Regan carrying her la lyship to her new home.
SECOND DAY. Pigeon shooting match, for a silver watch and guard, won by Mr, D. MTntosh, who killed all his birds in a sportsmanlike manner. Running hop, step and jump, six entries.— Won by M. Beattie, at thirty three feet two inches ;J. Druromy being second at thirty two feet three inches. Hurdle race, four entries.—A pretty race won by William Jenkins, closely followed by J. Druinray. Wrestling, Cumberland style, four entries.—Won easily by M'Dermott, Brown being second. Nine aspirants, for “01' Buffers Race "then -toed the mark, and after the report, of the pistol, Andrew Britton was cheerfully hailed as the winning Old. Buffer.. Sthp' ing jump, four competitors.--Wil-liam Regan 1; W. Vause, 2 . ■ inputting the ‘ stone, Irish style, three entries,—J. Judge, 1 ; L. G. Ryan, 2. . The Siamese Twin Race was won by Messrs Vause and Keenan. The one hundred and fifty yards foot race for boys was won by William Telford, his brother G. Telford making a good second, closely followed by Scott. Consolation font race, five entries.—William Regan, 1 ; William Samson, 2. The prize for climbing the greasy pole, was obtained by C. Paget at almost the last minute, many having tried, but failed to get more than half way up the pole.
