CRICKET.
MATAKANDIv. CLYDE, ALEXANDRA, AND CROMWELL UNITED.
The cricketing season was inaugurated on Friday last by a match on the Clyde Cricket Ground, between eleven of the Matakanui Club and eleven of the Clyde. Alexandra, and Cromwell Clubs. The weather was everything that could be desired, and a capita' day’s sport was hail. A verv fair sprinkling of visitors were present during the greater part of the day, who appeared to take a most lively interest in the game as it proceeded. Of ! ladies but very few were present, and j their absence was traceable to the entire | want of accomodation for them, and it is to | he hoped our Clyde Club w-ill see in future that that is remedied. The presence of a goodly concourse of specters, as a rule, has a beneficial eff,ct, and it acts two ways :Ist, it encourages the players to do their best and to display their prowess ; 2n 1 it clearly shows by the interest taken by nouplayers that the noble game is recognised, and appreciated. The hint is given, and the hope is reiterate 1 that the only drawback to the presence of the ladies will he, on future occasions. obviated. With regard to the play, as was anticipated, the Matakanui eleven were victorious, and we cannot but think, if the uniti d clubs were to practice more steaddy. they would prove tougher opponents than they did on Friday last.
