CROMWELL SPRING RACES,
to The above meeting commenced on FriclaylW last. The weather was most pleasant, and, for a wonder, neither wind nor dust to disturb the enjoyments of those present. The attendance, though not large was very fair, and the softer sex appeared in more than usual numbers, Although the meeting was only for “ hacks” some horses of local note contended for the various prises, among ethers Kate, Cromwell, Doodlembuck, Roderiok, Nell Greyj Tonic, Fenian, &c. For the first race. Kate had it all her own way in both heats. Mr. Turnbull's Te Kooti, ridden by the owner took the Hurdle Race easily, more owing to the faults of his opponents than his own merits. Madam won the third race (heats) winning both first and second, This was about the best race of the day—between Madam, Rip, and Doodlembuck, in the first heat, and between the former and latter iu the second. The Hurry Scurry was won by Roderick ridden, by Charley Holt. There were ouiy two ea tries, catch weights. Mtidcn Plate. Mr. Hayes’ g.m. Kate 1 1 Werner’s b.g. Sly 2 4 Kate took and maintained the lead in both heats winning easily. Hurdle Race. Mr. Turnbull’s Te Kooti 1 M'Morran’s Faugha-Ballagh 2 Sweepstakes. Mr. Cox’s Madam . 1 1 Smitham’s Rip 22 Hurry Scurry. Mr. M’Morran’s Roderick 1 Wrightsou’s Doodlembuck 2 This closed the day’s programme, and though the racing was rather below what we are accustomed to in this district, it was upon the whole, very fair. A second day’s sport was got up ex tempore on Saturday, when some well contested races were runNotabiy the Free Han neap, which was won by half a nock by Madam, beating Ro mrick Kelly Grey, Cromwell, and Kate, the latter of whom boltc I off ihe course at starting. The trotting race was won by Mr. Stewar g stumpy, Grace being secou!, in fact, the race between those two, though six others started. Mr. Smitham won the Consolation Handicap with Cromwell, who was in very poor condition and was coesequently very lightly weighted, and the'Ho-.pita* race, which, as usual excited great interest was carried off bv iittle Holt, on RoderickMr. Joseph Harding, of the Junction Can.* mereial Hotel, preside ■ at the Grand Sfau I "hj eh was wellpatoronise',j,and the quality of the liquids and solids consume 1 seemed to give universal satisfaction.
