CROMWELL.
(FHOJir A CORRESPONDENT.) July 6. The weather here for the last few days has been delightful, aid consequently a great improvement; is visible on all the roads, which are drying up fast, rendering travelling a matter of less difficulty than it has been for some time.
St. John’s Catholic Church was dedicated on Wednesday last with great solemnity, and the celebration of High Mass by Father Norris, -with father Boyer as assistant Priest. A collection afterwards made in the f Church realised the handsome sum of £3O, and, when the small number who attended is taken into consideration, it speaks well for the liberality and zeal displayed by thsmembers of the Church. The 4th of July was commemorated here with rejoicings, and was observed as a holiday by a great many who claim A-meriea as their native land. At the shooting match which came off in the afternoon -Mr. Burres was declaimed the winner. The Committee had been disappointed in procuring caps suitable for a rifle, and the shooting had to be made by a fowling-piece loaded with a heavy charge of duck shot. The target was a wlu'-el, on the axle of which was pasted a sheet of paper for a bull’s-eve. The wheel being set in motion down the hill, it required a quick eye and steady hand to make a score. Much amusement was caused by the novelty of the proceedings, and every one enjoyed themselves thoroughly. In the evening a regular fnsilade of crackers was kept up by the .juvenile population, who paraded the streets soliciting the nee Ifni to carry on the sport, in return fur which they gave an sntertainafter the style of the Christy’s Minstrels. The election of Mayor is looked forward to with considerable interest by all parties, and, as we have two candidates already in the field, there is likely to be a close contest. It is to be hoped the best man will be’ohosen. -A corteous, -able, intelligent, and energetic man is much wanted at the head of municipal affairs, and though it would be invi ious, at this early stage, to say who shall be the coming man," yet any person who has watched the progress of municipal affairs will plainly see that a change is needed. Each candidate stands on his own merits, and doubtless he who has shown by his past exertions that the welfare of the town-and district is his chief study is the man most fitte 1 to hold the highest position that the voice of his fellow 'citizens van raise him to, and that is the honorable position of Mayor of one of the most flourishing towns on the goldfi fields. Situate as Cromwell is, with the immense "undeveloped riches in the surrounding ranges, in both quartz reels and alluvial -ground, there is a bright future coming, and it only requires that the inhabitants should be true to themselves to make it one of the foremost |up-country towns in the province.
The letter announcing the opening of the land at the Hawea Lake has given great satisfaction to 'hll parties. Much dissatisfaction is caused by the irregularity in the arrival of the mails, and also hy their detention after they have arrived. The letters delivered this morning have been twelve days on the road- widen is too long to be pleasant to any one. Some 'alteration is urgently needed, and the sooner •action is taken the better.
