DRYBREAD.
(from a correspondent. ) June 11. Mining was never in a more prosperous ‘Condition than at the present time—an animus.rally ill i wjnt:;r, ahun lanes of wa'or, •and good • respects— heref ire I think it will be the most successful season this district ever s iw. Large padd ieks will be the ■or !er of the d y.
Tim petition for a Warden's Court to be li K1 he -- ! mon!hly 1; is b'en going the round for signatures. Lan i iforme 1 5k lias b ‘en forwarded to bia l-c]Sarters, with about one bun Ired ami sixty signatures act •■ehsd, mostly of n;i iers residing in ITswtown Tinker’s, and Devonshire. This will enable you to form a rough estimate of our population, which, including Women and children, amounts to something over two hundred and eighty. There are about eighty sluiceheads of water and scores of miles of races, so that any one acquainted with mining cannot fail to see the necessity of a Warden’s Court being held monthly, and I have no doubt the Superintendent, with his usual resire to promote the prosperity of the gol’fields, will readily grant the reasonable request of the petitioners. As most of the produce from the Tigerliill will find its way here fer a market, and US there is a splendid level road all the way, with tue exception of crossing the swamp by the rooks, one culvert would remedy the evil ; and as it also reduces the distance to Clyde to twenty-four rai’es, I think the attention of the authorities should he called to it, as a very trifling outlay would do a vast amount of good. About four culverts would also make a pood road to Block’s, and so place us in a good position to get on to the main north line of road at two different points. In a recent issue of yours I notice there has been a movement at Hyde in ref rence to the low price of gold. I think all the miners ought to join in petitioning the banks to increase the price to something nearer its real value.
Competition runs high with the business people. Drybread claims first honors for re'dueing the price of provisions, Black’s •following closely in the same direction. With the present wholesale prices there is for a still greater reduction. The Rev. C. S. Ross preachod in the ■School-house on Sunday last, to a limited congregation. If the reverend gentleman Would perform Divine Service at Drybread in the afternoon and at Tinker’s in the evening it would add greatly to the conve nience of the residents here.
