DRYBREAD.
(from our own correspondent. April 2G. Winter appears to lie fast approaching, if one may jn 'ge from the present weather, which is unusually cold for this month, sharp biting winds with alternate falls of snow ami keen frosts, hut on the whole, ; favorable for mining operations, which arc being vigorously pushed forward. The late satisfactory yields havegiven a fresh impetus to all concerned. Fresh ground is being taken up accordingly, and the course of the Drybread Sludge Channel being at present the most favorable locality. Wexford terrace is also attracting some a.tention, Conway and party having opened a new claim with good prospects Tipperary point is still in favor, but the great drawback to this place, is want of fall. Great indignation is expressed at the decision of the Warden at St. Bathan's in ordering s mith and party of the Five-mile Creek to turn two heads of water down the creek, (after being in un iisputed posssssion for nearly three years) to satisfy the claim of Messrs Roberts and Handy side; squatters. Some think it is only for the love of seeing the bonnie burn flow past their home station, if so, it is a great pity, as the water so wasted would aid more to the revenue, than all the squatters in the Manuherikia Valley, The indiscriminate mnnner in which the road from the Township to the miners' homes, is cut up by run holders, is a subject of general complaint, and in some instances, is rendered absolutely dangerous. It ought to be the duty of thfi police to look after this matter, otherwise I may on some future occasion have to chronicle the loss of life or limb. The School Committee intend opening the school for the banc'it of the little ones, as soon as they obtain the services of a duly qualified teacher. Glorious news !—Mr.Mellor of the "Victoria Store, has conferred a great boon on the inhabitants of this place, also, the surrounding district, by opening a butcher's shop in connection with his store, at least, the shop is in progress, and is now selling meat at a reduced price of thirty per cent, for which, he not only deserves the thanks but also the support of cvery-one, as monopoly has reigned rampant here for something like four years, and the progress of the district demand the entire abolitiou of the Old Identity principles. There is nothing like a little wholesome competition—- , Free trade for ever ! The Rev. Mr. Ross held Divine Service here on Sunday last; there was a good attendance, he was listened to with marked attention throughout. IgThero is also a movement on foot to obtain the services of a Church of England Clergyman, and 1 have no doubt, the canvassing of the District for funds for that purpose will be liberally responded to.
