MARTIN’S BAY SETTLEMENT.
PAYABLE GOLD DISCOVERED. COMMENCEMENT OF THE'OVERLAND TRACK. SUCCESS OF THE DREDGE ON THE SHOTGVER. [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH ] (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. QUEENSTOWN, Thursday, 5 p.m. Groat excitement prevails in Queens fown, and, in fact, throughout the whole district, in respect of Martin’s Bay. Mr. Simpson, the Road Engineer, left Queenstown this morning, by steamer, talcing with hiih a road party of about thirty men, lor the purpose of'-catting and forming the track. Information perched here last evening that a prospecting party from Canterbury had discovered payable gold nbout twenty-five miles from the head of Lake Wakatip. It is expected that there will be a rush made to thuYpot. It is in contemplation *to build a new Town Hall in Queenstown. For that purpose a company has been formed and provisional directors appointed under the provisions of the Limited Liability Act. Large numbers of diggers are pro ceeding to Martin’s Bay, among others, Fox, well known as the discoverer of the Arrow. The dredge on the Shotover has proved a great success, and is paying handsomely.
