ALEXANDRA.

(from a correspondent.) April 6. The most nhteworthy item of news I have this week is the formal christening of the Manhuerikia Brewery which took place on Saturday afternoon last, notwithstandidg the unpropitious weather, a goodly number were in attendance, among whom were noticeable several ladies from Clyde ami Alexandra, a few of the leading men of either township, and a good sprinkling of miners. The compay as they arrived scattered themselves through the buildings, and under the guidance of the one or "ether of the proprietors examined the whole of the works, this being completed, a move was made to the central floor, where a liberal supply of the good things of this earth were in readiness. Order being restored, Mr, 11. Finlay, Mayor of Alexandra led forth Miss Coleman, who acting as sponsor, dashed the orthodox bottle of champagne against one of the coppers. Success to tbe undertaking having been drunk in bumpers of champagne, Mr. Finlay came foftfard and in a very appropriate addrass eulogized the energy of Messrs Theyevs and Beck in angurating local industries, an 1 said that without a question success must reward them. Messrs Theyers and Buck responded in suitable terms, thanking the Company for their presence, concluding by saying that no effort would be spared 'oil their part to retain the good opinion that had been expressed that day. Messrs J. O. Chappie, Stanbrook, Brown and other gentlemen then spoke, after which your Correspondent left The winde affair was most cre-dit-able, and every one returned to their homes well please 1 with themselves and every one else. Mining matters may be said to be in ' statu quo ’ there being nothing new opened or fresh finds male, but witbail a most satisfactory state of affairs exist, shareholders being well paid, and wages men being fully occupied. The new Company that is being formed to further prospect the Butcher’s Gully reef is not yet complete, but 1 Tnldcrstand there is every probability of tbe share list being filled up in the course of a few days, when the work will be proceeded with renewed vigor. As an evidence of tbe faith iu the reef, one of the original shareholders intends to retain bis full interest and employ labor to represent it. Joseph Knowles and party have taken up an extended claim on the banks of tbe Molyneux on the West side, about two miles from Alexandra, it is the intention of the party to work the main bottom, a water wheel, With all the necessary paraphauaha for paddocking lias been ordered, and in about four weeks time -work w ill be commenced, from the prospects, great results are anticipated. Tbe Hit or Miss party on Frenchman’s Point have again got fairly to work, and are employing a large number of hands. The system of drawing the dirt up from their pa'docks by means of a horse xvhip is a very exoe'lent one, and must he a great saving of labor. I am sorry to say the dredges that started to xvork during the past week have been compelled to lay up again, the quantity of tailings running along the bed of the river preventing them reaching the original bed. The Chinese are again making their way on to the river, and in a short time our town will he teeming with numbers of that indefatigable and interesting race. On Monday last, Mr. Field delegated with the pow'or by Vincent Fyke, Esq., sat on the Bauch an 1 adjudicated on the several cases that wore before the Court, two cases of drunkenness, the delinquents after r’ceiving a just reprimand were discharged with a caution. Mr. Field also delivered judgment in the Warden’s Court, in the case Stancombe v. M‘Guinness, the Judgment Was in favor of M‘Guinness, who, by the decision is protected against encroachment.
