A DUBIOUS WELCOME.
Mr. C , a gentleman who had just finished hss first attempt at authorship, which met with arernark-n-blo .success, was shortly after met by a seedy-looking individual. Tho latter extended his hand, and in a tragic manner exclaimed, " Allow me, sir, to welcome you to our ranks—-tho ranks of authorship." The peculiar appearance of tho individual rather amused Mr. 0 , and he replied, "Thank yon, sir, but may I venture to ask who you are, and what work bears jour name ? " Certaiuly, sir. " Havo you ever heard of Tennyson, the poet laureate ? " "Yes," said Mr. C . " Well, I am not ho. But havo you ever heard of Longfellow ? " " Yes, but I have never Been, him. Surely you are not Longfellow ? " " No, lam not he." "Then who tho dickens aro yon." "Ah! thoro. Have you over heard of Charles "Dickens ? " "Yes, hut I know you are not Charles Dickens." " No, sir, I am neither Tennyson, Longfellow, no? Dickens; but, sir, I, tho individual who stand.-) prominently bofore you in tho noblo person cf a man —I, sir, am——" " Well, sir, who are you, and of what tho deuce aro you tho author?" "I, sir, am Jonathan Kawiings Piooy Piggleton, and I am the celebrated author of an invaluable receipt for taking grease spots, tar, oil, and all Btains whatsoever out of cloth, wood, marble, carpets, &0., and which I will be most happy to sell you or any other geutloman ■who now looks upon mo." Mr. C collapsed.
