TRIAL OF A MURDERER.

The Paris Court of Assises was recently engaged for two days with t'ao trial of the man Allegre, aged 27, charged with the murder of a butcher's shopman, named Defert, 19, in the wood of Vincenncs. The body wan discovered ono morning in October, 18»JB, partly undressed, and with the head nearly separated from the trunk. No trace of the guilty parties were obtained until the month of January following', when, the prisoner was arrested for robbery; he had assumod a false name, and was wearing tho uaifora of a seaman, a'though ho is a working smith, and baa never been in the naval sorvice. The pains he had taken to conceal his identity caused the police to suspect that soma raoro weighty charge might bo hanging over him. He was closely interrogated relativo to different murders, the authors of whieh had not been disr covered, and he at length confessed that tho death of tho young man Defert had been caused by his hand, and gave such circumstantial details as to leave no doubt of the exactitude of his statement. Allegro had been frequently condemned for theft and robbery; but, on tho other hand, his master gave him a good character for industry, and on the trial it was stated that ho had saved the lives of two children during a fire, at the immediate risk of perishing himself, and had subsequently jumped into tho Seine and rescued a drowning woman. The prisoner was fouud prnilty with extenuating circumstances, and condemned to hard labour for life.
