At tire usual fortnightly meeting of the Clyde Town Council, held on Wednesday evening last, the Town Clerk was instructed to at once col leetthe Water Rates, and to distrain upon all persons objecting, refusing, or neglecting to pay the same. In our report of the proceedings of meeting of contributors to the Dunstan District Hospital we omitted the following resolution, which we now publish ;—“ That A T. Thomson, Esq, M.8.C.M., anl J. Corse, Esq., M H be appointed Honorary Visiting Surgeons to the Hospital. We understand that both gentlemen have accepted the appointment.

We are informed that Mr. Henrv Milburn, the newly appointed Secretary to the Dunstan District Hospital, has been duly installed in his office. All commtinications in connexion with that Institution should be addressed to him.

A correspondent writing us from the Bendigo Reef ; says :—The recent discoveries of golden deposits in the Aurora Company’s claim lias cieated immense sensation, and risen the spirits of the somewhat desponding reefers, in fact, the confidence in the reefs is by far greater now than ever, and hundreds of pounds are unblushing! y asked for interests that could have been purchased for as many tens. The richness of the late discoveries is undoubtedly such as to warrant excitement, but I advi-edly say that the reports of one pound of gold to three of stone was rather far fetched. Of what extent the patch may eventually be, it is impossible to say, but f reckon from what is in view, many hundreds of ounces of the precious metal will be obtained. The gold is coarse, and thoroughly impregnates the band of conglomerate in which it lies

The damage done to the approach to the Clyde Ptnii during the recent l a I weather tire, we are happy to say, repaired, and the punt is again available for wheeled traffic.

The Fitly of the rival Mayors of Cromwell was concluded on Friday the 11th inst., the closin ' scene being the handing over the keys of office and till municipal property to .Mr. G. W. Coodger The new era, nnch r the leadership of G. W. Goodger, Esq, Mayor, assisted by Messrs. Bnrres and Kell}, Councillors, was' inaugurated on Monday the 14th inst by a special meeting, at which it was resolved that Mr. Dagg and Mr. Dawkins wen-disqualified from holding office, and that the nomination of candidates to (ill the vacant seats take place on Tuesday the 22nd inst. Mr George Jenonr. Town Clerk, who was deposed under the rr.yimz of the \Vbetter Mayoralty, was reinst it<-d in o lice. Beyond the issuing of a few instructions to the Town Clerk no business was transacted, the Mavor intimating that until the vacancies in Kawami and Bridge Wards we e filled he did no" feel disposed to proceed with business. The meeting then adjourned. A lood journal states that the Table Hill Quartz Mining Company, after tunnelling nearly two hundred feet, lately reached the casing of a reef and the reef itself a few days subsequently. The indications are very good, and stone of two inches or so thick show gold throughout to the naked eye. Wo hope this may lead to increased energy on the part of S'-me of our claimholders in this district, and that they will cease to get disheartened because they cannot get gold bearing strno in a week or two, but will keep manfully at work, and give their claims a thorough toM It is of no use to just sink a shaft a few feet deep, and then abandoning it, like a child does a new toy. Energy and perseverance are required, and by the exercise of these qualities have the rich reefs been developed, as for instance the Cromwell Company’s and the Aurora Company's claims at Bendigo Gully. These claims were not profitably opened in a week, nor a month, nor a year, but the success of the parties is due to their energy and perseverance, and we trust that their success will stimulate others to follow their example. It appears that there is a great amount of destitn'ion at the Thames A deputation waited upon his Honor the Superintendent on the matter, urging upon him the necessity of opening public works to save the un employed from starvation. fn Canterbury the crops are said to be in jeopardy from want of labor to secure it, and it has been suggested, that the Government would do well to charter fine or more of the steamers now lying idle to remove the nnenqvoyed to places where their labor would not. only benefit themselves, but the persons who availed themselves of their labor.

Tho present; strike appears to ' have afforded an opportunity for some w;i" to play oil an innocuit practical joke upon the food folks of N 'selr-. During the night of Monday this Wag placarded every place of business in the town with a poster in letters ot nearly a foot long, containing only the words “selling off.” Much as tonishment was caused when the residents ol the town awoke fa'-m their slumbers on Tuesday to find their properties advertised for sale without their consent, .as all, however had been served tho same, tho only feeling exhibited was that of amusement.
