ALEXANDRA.

(FUOU OUR OW.V CORIIESPONDENT.)

February 1

The heavy downfall of rain on Friday last has again caused a targe amount of ’damage to our miners, more particularly at Du teller’s and Conroy’s Guides, the who'e of the tail races in the two plates, owing to the great flow of water have been silted up, ■and will cause a large amount of labor to be expended before they are placed in working order. The Ovens and the Manuherikia Water Races, athoirgh receiving some damage have been enabled to make the necessary repairs and resume work. Ourpic-nic, from which great pleasure was anticipated, owing to the state of the weather was put off until the following Thursday, when a large attendance is ex-

peoted. Our Post Master, Mr. Gumming, Las received notice, that his appointment is canCelle', Mr. Vause of the Telegraph Office being appointed, and the Post Office trans-fer-red to that office, but how this accession ‘of business can be transacted without fhe erection of a larger or additional building is difficult to understand, as the whole of the available space for the working of the Telegraph, together with this new department added, does not exceed a space larger than S foot by 10 feet, therefore I think the Postal Authorities have been rather premature in making these alterations, without first ascertaining what Government bail lings were at their disposal. On Monday evening, the newly appointed School Committee met at the School Room, Mr. Reid the Schoolmaster was cs peoially invited to attend for the pur-pose of giving any information that might be "deemed necessary by the Committee ; the only business transacted was, the acceptance of the resignation of Mr. Field, who held the appoint merit of Secretary, together with the carrying of a motion to the effect, 1h it the salary par I to the school-master of the Alexandra School should he fixed at the rate of £2OO per annum, Mr. Chappie, 'acting Secretary pro tern , being instructed to communicate by letter to Mr. Peid the present Schoolmaster, offering that gentleman these terms for his services.

A Building Committee, consisting of Messrs Field. Gordon, and Theyers were

appointed. Tim Contractors (for the erection of the School-master’s Residence) are expected io commence the Building in a few days. At tho Wa-den’s office, Mr. Pyko granted a site for the erection of Qn rtz Crushing Plant to Meis-s Paget and Company at the Alexandra Reef.

Halliday and party have a ided two move men to their complement of hands, makii g eight miners to the two shifts, and t*-e sinking is progressing satisfactorily ; this Company are making great exertions, and expect to strike the reef in three weeks.

A good number of miners have In n knocked off work on the hanks of the Molyueux by tho rising of the river.
