NEWS FROM THE NORTH.
(Condensed from the Daily Times.) Napier, Jan. 27. News received from Cambridge, dated the 25th, states that Colonel M‘Donnell was in sight of Te Kooti, whose position was five miles distant, and intended to attack him the next morning at daylight. Our forces had captured an enemy’s picket, killing one man and taking three pri-oners. Hakaria, Kereopa, and Te Warn are with Te Kooti. Colonel Moule was to march from Cambridge with a Waikato force to co-operate with M •Donnell.
Mr. Firth has had an interview with To Knoti, who refused to surrender, and would offer no terms to the Government Mr. Firth receive I an assurance from To Kooti that ho would not interfere with his Mr. Firth’s cattle. Mr. Firth is acting without authority from the Government. The Thames diggers have held a meeting on the subject of occupying Ohinemuri ; at which it was resolved to go there on Monday. Another meeting passed a resolution in favor of awaiting the result of a reference to the Native Minister.
No change worth mentioning has taken place in mining operations.
Jan. 28.
A despatch from Colonel M‘Donnell, dated Patatere, January 25, states that his force moved that mo ruing to attack the enemy’s position. The enemy opened fire from the surrounding bush. Our force crove them back and took Te Kooti’s position, to hold which no attempt was made. Our loss was—one native killed an I fourwounded, and one European mortally wounded. The enemy lost four killed and ten prisoners. Our forcer are following the enemy, who is in the hush. All Te Kooti’s horses have been captured, and Colonel M ‘Donnell has mounted one hundred and fifty men with them, whom he has posted in the open country, in order to cut off the enemy’s retreat to the Uriwera. Supplies had reached our forces from Cambridge. A weekly mail has been established between Tapuchararu arid Cambridge.
