CLYDE SPRING RACE MEETING

The second Annual Spring Race Meeting held on the Duusfau Course came off on Friday last. The weather was all that could be desired, the course was in line trim, there was a large field of horses, and last, hut not least, there was about as respectable a gathering as one would have wished to see. The Grand •'•'•tand, quite gay with the British Ensign floating proudly on either side, was well patronised in the bar as well as on the top, where at least one hundred and fifty people must have been assembled to witness each event. Flattery is not intended, but in giving credit where credit is due, we must say that Host Cox, who had the stand, was quite up to the mark both in the eatable and drinkable departments, and from the manner in which his endeavours to please were apreciated, we think he Ins no just cause to complain of his speculation The greatest good feeling was exhibited throughout the day. not a word of bad temper being heard, everyone appearing to be bent on enjoym nt.

The racing was good, and when the time was made known that the different events were run in, everyone agreed in saying that the racing was excellent. The first race of the day, the hurdle race, found eight entries, the formidable Charlie among the number, to whom the money was awarded, he winning the first and second heats. During the first heat Don Juan had a nasty fall, but suffered no injury, neither did his rider (Bock). During the second heat Daniel O' Rouke and his rider (C. Turnbull) came to grief at the last hurdle, hut neither suffered more than a severe shaking, though it was feared both horse and rider were injured. The three-quarters of a mile race was a very good one, for which seven started. Three heats were run, the favorite, Hermit, winning the first. Jenny winning second and third heats easily. For the third race, distance one mile, twelve started, among which we recognised Excelsior, Dr. Black, Rate, Roderick, Tonic, Madam, and Wallaby. This was an excellent race, but the Quartz-reef horse took the shine nut of the cracks winning easily.Taggart, who was riding Excelsior, brought out his horse well and with good judgment steered him clear through the crowd to a place of safety iu the von, which he maintained home, Tonic taking second place, and Madam third. The Hospital race, which closed the sports of the day, was a most spirited race, and was won by Charley Holt on Roderick.
