ENGLISH ITEMS.
Colonel Henderson, formerly of Western Australia, has been appointed Chief Commisssioner of the Metropolitan police. Two Admiralty officials have been committed for'trial on the charge of conspiring to extort money from gentlemen tendering for supplies. For a tender accepted under the direction of the authorities, a Mr. Max' well paid them £3O. Robert Hartnell, the working man’s candidate, has passed through the Bankruptcy Court.
Four hundred wrecks are reported since the opening of the present year. The ritualists arc conforming to the late decision under strong protest. The Times notices with surprise that some Australian Banks have become shippers and importers of ivool. Sir Charles Slingsby and six others, were drowned while fox hunting, in attempting to cross a river.
Admiralty tenders have been issued for 200,00011)3 of Australian preserved beef.
The Queen has contributed £l5O towards the Colonial Emigration Fund. A public meeting has been held, at which it was resolved to seek Government assistance and to form an Emigration Committee, composed of members of the society, to travel throughout England to help unemployed persons to emigrate. The Government has decided to release forty nine Fenians from prison. A supplementary estimate shows the cost of the Abyssinian Expedition to have been £3,600,000. The House of Commons has passed the necessary grant.
