PUBLIC MEETING.

A public meeting, convenodbyths Mayor, was held in the Council Chambers, Clyde, ( on Weclne day evening last, for the purpose of electing a Fire Briga e, and to take into consideration what apparatus should he purchased for the extinguishing of fires. J. Hazlett, Esq., Mayor, who was voted to the chair sai l, That several gentlemen an d himself had privately met and isousao the. probable consequences of the late fire, had it occurred in a building other than a detached one, and at a time when the Town was provided with only a few buckets, ho need not reiteratowhatoveryone was awaro of, an > that was. That the half of the town would have boon burnt down, and that ruin to many wool! have followed in fho wako of the calamity Seeing that nothing practical could be done without money, it was agreed upon that ho (the mayor) and Mr. Cox should canvass the town for subscriptions. A number of suggestions r. ere thrown

out, among which were the following.— That the Town race should be reconstructed at its highest level, which would bo about forty feet above any building, and that a main pipe with plugs at intervals should be laid the whole length of th Town. That the small engine, the Corporation of Dunedin have for sale, should be purahased. That a series of tanks should be constructed along the course of the race through the Town. That small baud engines, Are hooks, &c. be purchased. Ultimately, after considerable discussion, is was resolved, That a Fire Brigade be at once formed, consisting of twenty-four members, with power to elect their own officers, and that a sub-committee of ten be elected to ascertain the cost of carrying out the various suggestions, and to report accordingly at a public meeting to bo called lor the purpose. Messrs. Hazlott, Cox, Beck, Christophers, Clark, Patterson, Auckland, Barlow,Grindley, and Tyrrell were elected the subcommittee. James Hazlett, Esq., Mayor, was appointed Treasurer, aud Mr. M. Marshall Secretary pro. tern A vote of thanks to tile chairman terminated the proceedings.
