PIKST DAY, THURSDAY, FEB. 4. The liberal programme issued by the Stewards Lad for some time past set the racing world on the “qui vive” and never since the Dunstan became a Goldfield, have lacing matters attracted so much general interest. Brilliant weather tempered by light showers which had fallen during the night ushered ip Thursday morning. From a pretty carlr hour visitors began to pour into Clyde from the out districts, and by noon the patrons and lovers of our greatest national sport had assembled in full force. Che course was in splendid condition, and smooth as a bowling-green, the Stewards having removed every inequality that could possibly interfore with the running Th i Grand Stand had been much improved ainco the last meeting, a daub of paint hero and
there together with sundry additions o carpenter’s work had worked wonders. Messrs. Johnson and Patterson the lessees of the Stand, came out extensively. The arrangements made by them for supplying the hungry and thirsty vero of the most elaborate description, nothing whatever was wanting. The attendance was not quite so largo as anticipated. The grand stand drove a roaring trade, am} all the itinerant fruit sellers an i Aunt Sally men seemed to bo well patronised. The first race came off promptly at one o’clock. Herraitand Merrythought were in splendid trim, Balmoral and Tommy looked rather weedy, but the latter, notwithstanding this disadvantage, managed to come in second. The District Handicap was well contested Musician beating Golden Cloudby only half a length. The Matakanui Stables were evidently in luck this time. Maiden Plate of 50 Sovs. One mile and a half. Mr. Glassford’s b. g. Merrythought (Waddle) j Richards’ b.g Tommy (Richards) 2 M'Morran’s br.g. Hermit (Holt) 3 A good start. Tommy led off followed by Balmoral and Hermit. After the first quarter of a mile the Hermit pulled to the Balmoral falling to the rear. At the H half mile Merrythought challenged the solHr tary.one and a neck and neck race till half « ay up the straight running, Merrythought flogging, Waddle then let the Bay out and won in a canter. District Handicap of 75 Sovs., with sweep, stake of 2 Sovs. added for second horse. Two miles. Mr. Glassford’s g.g. Musician (Waddle) I Turnbull’s c g. Golden Clop I (Foote) )• T ; '*i . . 2 Smitham’s bg. Cromwell (Barry) 3 Cowan’s o.g. Poison Smitham’s c.g. Idleboy M'Farlane’s b.g. Schoolboy Musician and Golden Cloud were in magnificent condition and were favorites from the firstSoon after starting some drunken fellowmanaged to ride right into Golden Cloud, with whom he came in violent collision, almost unseating Frank Foote. A passable start was effected, Renown and Idle Boy led off closely pressed bytheruck, who made a splendid field ; this order was maintained for some distance, when Golden Cloud and Musician drew to the front, the race became an exciting one, the Cloud slightly leading, his jockey flogging. Waddle whei)fcvithin fifty yards of the • winning pest, called upon the Gray, and came in a winner by scarcely half a length. Mr. Han lysiJe’s blk g Hindoo (Bock) 2 1 1 M'Morrau’s c.g Stoekwell 13 2 Newtons blk g Tonic The jumps were all taken every time, it was evidently Hindoo’s race had his jockey b\ accident not have missed one hurdle in the first heat: Town Plate of 150 Sovs. Two miles and a half Mr. Wentworths b c Croydon (Goodman) j M ‘Bengali's c g Skyonian 2 Turnbull's c g Golden Cloud 3 This was the best startof the day. Fenian jumped off with the lead closely followed by tbc field, this order was maintained fer about half a mile when Fenian fell to tho roar, Skyonian occupying first place followed by Traveller, Croydon, and Golden Cloud, a neck and neck race ensued between Skyonian and Croydon, the former havingrather the best of it, Golden Cloud a good third, Mailboy close up. Just before reaching the post Croydon managed to draw slightly a-head and won by scarcely half a neck amidst breathless excitement. At a little more than half the distance Mainsail fell, and fractured one of the small bones in tho off fore 100. Time 5 min., 8 sec. . Hack Selling Race of 20 sovs. one mile heats ; winner to be sold for 20 sovs. Mr. Glassford’s Madam, first, Mr. Richard's Tommy 2. The winner was soi l by Mr G. Faohe, for L3l to Mr. R. Dagg of Cromwell.
