(Abridged from the Daily Times telegrams. Wellin-c.to”, Jan 20 The John Penn has arrived here from Wanganui. From information received from the two Hau-liaus who were lately taken prisoners when bearing a flag of truce, Colonel M ‘Donnell determined to make a rai l upon To Ngutu-o-te-manu, in the hope of recovering the bo ues of those who fell there. Last week ho eft Patea, with his brother Edward, Kemp, V* irehana, Hori Gray and seventy or eighty Maori cavalry. On Friday he left W aihi on foot, and stealthily approached Te Ngutu-o-te-manu, but found it deserted. In the spot described by the prisoners. Von Tempsky’s body was found partly burned, in one place ; and close by, the remains of the others, partly burned and partly eaten. Ho burned and destroyed all the buildings and cultivations in the place, looted sixteen horses, and on Tuesday rdturne to Patea with Von Tempsky’s body, after burning the others. Von Tempsky’s remains will bo sent to Wanganbi. The “ Wanganui Times ” says The Kai Iwi Cavalry yesterday requested to be put off duty in consequence of Colonel Whitmore's conduct to them. Many of j he torces declare that they will not go into action with him. Desertion is very common, and tho men stationed at Wcstmero ore being moved on to Woodall's redoubt. C'oknel Whitmore is moving forward to cross the Kai Iwi. A Maori woman named Attcrea has been murdered at Raliporo Wairoa, near Auckland, by a man named Euka, for causing his brother’s death by witchcraft. Tho ctefc fca* l‘«*u investigated by tho Chick,
and the woman had confessed, when Ruka tomahawked her and escaped. Napier, Jan. 20. On Thursday, Locke and Lambert went to Taupo on a political mission at the instance of Mr. Richmond. On Friday, nexvs came from Wuiroa that a native letter had been received there to the effect that Ngalipa had been re-occu-pied, fires having been seen in it at night. The St. Kilda, with Mr. Richmond, is hourly expected from Poverty Bay. The Sturt is suppose t to have gone to Wanganui, for tho balance of the Constabulary force. The weather is very dry here. General Chute arrived in Auckland on January 20th, and would proceed South immediately. Jan. 23. Native information has arrived from Poverty Bay, stating that the Hau-haus had again occupied Ngatipa in force. Numerous fires had been seen in that looatity. Wellington, Jan. 23. It is rumored in Auckland that Mr. James O’Neill will bo called to the Legislative Council. Some unpleasantness has occurred between Mr. Hall and Mr. Stafford over the appointment of Mr. Barff as a Justice of the Peace. The Governor will inaugurate the opening of the Wellington College, on Monday. Desertions from the forces at the front are stated to amount to one hnndred and fifty. The reported disagreement between Col. Whitmore and the Kai Iwi Volunteer Cavalry is confirmed.
