MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS.
A strange anomaly is brought to light by some recent proceedings in a Coroner's Court in South London. If a man finds a drowned body, and informs the authorities, he gets Bs. 6d. ; but if he saves the life of a drowning man he gets nothing. The coroner for East Surrey states that he has been informed that drunken men are pushed into the water, in order that the murderers may obtain 83. Od. each for the bo 'ies. The " Melbourne Araus" gives the following description of a Chinese newsnaner just established in Melbourne :—"lt is a sheet of white foolscan, upon which the Chinese characters have been well h>hogranhed. Ps name is the 'Fi-pao'—lite-rally ren 'ered ' Flying Tntelli?encer'—-and it resembles as nearly as possible an English commero al paner. the reading matter and advertisements being of course comnile and edite 1 exclusively for Chinese readers. The first number, we are informed, contain? preface, a portion of the Rev. Mr. Young's Chinese report an epitome of the last mail news, an account of the late earHiouake? in South America, and other intelligence The price is Cd. per copy.
