ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
We do not identify ourselves with the opinions that may be expressed by our correspondents. AN EXPLANATION. (To the Editor of the Dunstan Times.) Sir, —In your paper of Friday last, I observe a passage containing the following passage:—“A man named Allen, a miner living at A exandra, was brought up before the bench by the police charged with stealing from his mates.” Now, Sir, the passage above quoted, besides being very vague and obscure, is inaccurate in one important particular, an t I beg to state for your better information, that the party your reporter evidently intends to indicate, does not, nor ever did live at Alexandra; I may further inform you that the only miner of that name who resides or has rest ed at Alexandra for the last throe years, is myself, an’, I assure you that I am not in the least ambitious to attain notoriety of so very an unenviable a character. I do not mean to say that, in publishing the report referred to, you intended to mislea 1 the public ; but would remind you that reports of this sort cannot be too explicit. So far as regards its circulation in this immediate neighbsrhoo ’, where the facts are known, I care very little ; hut the “Dun. stan Times” circulates largely in other districts, and very often finds its way to the West Coast and to the neighboring colonies. What then, I ask you, may he the impression which the said report will leave on the minds of persons lately residing in this district, hut now located elsewhere, should they happen to peruse it ? I trust that, as a matter of justice you will find a corner for this in your next issue. I am, &c., JOHN ALLAN. Alexandra, Nov. 10, 1868.
