A proposal is under the consideration of the Government for the upj ointment of a bishop for the army, instead of a chaplain-general, as at present. The ishop would have episcopal powers at all stations to which our soldiers are liable to be sent, where there is now no bishop. The price of wool has receded two pence and three pence per pound. Woolwich is at the present time suffering from a visitation, viz : the appearance of thousands of mosquitoes which have been imported on the rigging of ammunition vessels from Bermuda and other military stations where the mosquito abounds. There is scarcely a man, woman or child out of the eight thousand inhabitants of the locality who has not been bitten and disfigured. Their sting pierces through the ladies’ dresses, stockings and other portions of wearing apparel, the swelling and irritation lasting for four or five days. In some instances the stings have been so numerous in the case of children as to endanger life. The excessive heat being favorable for their development and propogation, the mosquitoes are daily increasing in numbers, and threaten to become a local calamity, which nothing but a change in the weather is likely to remove.” A man reported to be a Fenian has been apprehended at Lucerne, on a charge of intending to assasinate the Queen. Ho has been found to be insane. War is still imminent between France and the north of Germany. A dreadful railway accident has occurred at Holy head. Lieutenant Meade has been killed bv the explosion of a torpedo, with which he was experimenting. He was in II M.S. Esk while she was on the Australian station. Short dresses for walking are in vogue. No fashionable lady in New York will appear in the streets wilh a long dress. To make up this curtailment, long trains in the house are made longer. Theodo rusks son is to be educated for the Indian Civil Service.
