As a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mrs. Joseph Hastie, of Clyde, the whole of the business people closed their establishments during the greater part of the afternoon on Tuesday last. It will be seen by our advertising columns, that .’essrs. R. D. Owens a 'd Company are once again the owners of the Cromwell Coal Pit. The untiring energy and skill of Mr. Owens in mining mutters is we 1 known, and we are sure that the Cromwell Pit will become a valuable and efficiently worked property in his hands. We understand that a Cricket match between the squatters and the townspeople of Clyde, Cromwell and Alexandra will bo played at Clyde on Tuesday, the 17th .November i ext. It will bo seen by our advertising columns, that a complimentary entertainment will be given this evening at the Town Hull, Clyde, to Mr. James Spcnsley by the town’s people and members of the Society in recognition of lus valuable services as leader of the Choir. Mr. Spensley loaves the Province in the course of a few days The Molyuoux River rose considerably on Monday. The works at the Frenchman’s Reach, Alexandra, are now over for the season. The reverend Father Hiekic preached at Clyde and Alexandra on Sunday last, his mission in collecting funds for the Catholic College in Ire- ; land was very successful, about 701. j was collected at the two places. The College for which the Reverend gentleman is collecting, and who comes ; to Now Zealand especially appointed | by his Holiness the Pope, is conductj f 'd purely on unscctarian principles, ' nil denominations bang alike admisib!o. The professors confine thfynselves strictly to the various branches of learning which they teach. The term Catholic being understood only* in its trim sense. The college, has proved itself so useful, that the pro. sent building is utterly insufficient to accomodate the students and profes sors, a dit is to extend its usefulness that subscript ons are now being collected. A special meeting of the memlnrs of the Association for the Extension of the Goldliclds in the direction of the Tapper Clutha was held on Monday evening last, at the Golden Age Hotel, Cromwell, for the purpose of receiving progress report from the Committee and winding up the Association, the object for which it was established having been accomplished. Mr. I!. F. Badger occupied die chair ! The Honorary Secretary read the report, which referred to the long correspoudendence (extending over five months) with members of the Provincia Council and General Assembly upou the subject of the extension of the goldfields. The report having been adopted, it was resolved to tender the thanks of the Association to Mr. Charles O’Neill, M.d.R., for his prompt, energetic, and successful support. It was also resolved that thanks be recorded to Mr. George Clarke for his valuable services as Honorary Secretary. The Association Laving been dissolved, a vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings. Another meeting was afterwards held, and a committee formed for the purpose of collecting subscriptions to defray the expenses incurred by the late Committee of the Miners Association, and at which meeting it was suggested that a testimonial bo presented to Mr. George Clarke, in recogj nitiou of his services as honorary secretary. We are informed that it is the intention of some of the members of the late Miners’s Association to call a public meeting at Cromwell, at an early date, for the purpose of obtaining from the Government a grant of land for agricultural, purposes in the Upper Clutha district, lately proclaimed a goldfield.

We believe however, that the Flour mill will still be started, that being the best use the Pioneer-race cau be put to. A very splendid Dapple Grey Stallion—Highlander—passed through Clyde on his way to the Arrow on Monday last. It is a new importation from Victoria, where it ■carried off prizes at Melbouane and Kilrnore as the best three year old stud horse It was imported to Otago by Air.
