SPPJXft MEETING. Wednesday, August 10, 18GS Stewards, Messrs I. Lough nan, R. Loughnan, J. Presliaw, and William Sniitlinm; Starter, W. J. Barry Esq. ; j Judge, 11. A. Loughnan Esq. This the first Spring meet held on ' the Cromwell course, was a most dei eided success, and to the enterprise and energy of Mr. W. Smithain of the Kawarau Hotel is solely duo the honor of having provided such a really first rate day's sport. The weather was delightfully fine ; there was neither dust nor wind, and the course though a little heavy, was iu splendid condition, The different . events were well contested, every ri- . der did his best to win ; the only , fault that could be found was, with i the starting, but this is excusable, ~ considering the horses were all nn . trained, and the great majority of the i riders had never ridden in a race meeting before; we hope however : that upon the next occasion Mr. Barry will bo more successful. First Race.—Sweepstake of ten shillings each with ten sovs. added, for all horses that have never won advertised money, winners at the Dun-
stan Spring Meeting excepted; halfmile heats. Mr Fraser,s Kate 1 A well contested race; nine horses started. Second Bace.— Sweepstake of £1 each, with ten sovs. added ; open to all horses on the same conditions as last race. Winners at Dunstan Sprim' meeting, and Hack races excepted. Mr. Richard's Tommy 1 A most exciting contest; won by half a head. Third Race.—Hurdle race, sweepstake of 10s. each, with 10 sovereigns added, three flights of hurdles, halfmile heats. Mr. Turnbull's Stockwell 1 Fleming's Polly 2 A closely contested race. Five horses started. Hospital Race.—Stake and entries to go to the Dunstan Hospital. Tea hor.es started. Mr. Fleming's Cod? Robin 1 Kneudson's Garnet 2 A capital race, Cock Robin winain" after a hard struggle Trotting .Match —There were six entries for this race which was won by Mr. M 'Morran's Colonel. Some private matches and a foot race wound up the day's sport.
