WATER RACES.
(To the Editor of the Dunstan Times.) Sir,—A notice from the Secretary of Land and Works appeared in your paper of the 31st nit., to persons wishing to construct water races, tendering professional assistance, and as there i 3 a doubt upon the minds of some of the mining community whether, in the event of obtaining the services of a surveyor from the Provincial Government, the undertaking will be required to be carried out. My motive in writing is that, knowing your zeal in all matters of public interest, a few words from you may tend'to allay anv doubt upon this subject, should great difficulties or expense prevent the carrying out of the undertaking. I am, &c, FRANK. Banuockburn, August 17, ISG3. [Whore there existed a reasonable probability of the scheme being carried out, the Government': would furnish the necessary professional assistance, but they could not be expected to render assistance for the pirpr.se of satisfying mere speculative curiosity. Any large undertaking, supposing professional assistance to have -been rendered, would, as a matter of course, have to stand its chance of being completed the original projectors, the same as any other mining enterprise : no particular party would be bound to carry it out. —Ed. D.T.]
