BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. (from our own correspondent.) Dunedin*, Thursday. The ruins of the fire have been carefully examined, but no human remains were discovered. Wellixoton. A Departmental Commission has been appointed. The whole of the £1,114,000 Loan has been taken up in London at 97. Double the amount tendered for. The new Road Boards Bill contains two hundred and forty-eight clauses. The present existing Road Districts may be brought under the Act when the petitions to the Governor in'favor of them outnumber the petitions against them. The now districts are not to bo less in area than fifteen square miles, and will be male road districts on similar conditions. If the number of petitions against the formation of a Road District are in the majority, and thus prevent its being forrnnd, that (Uoision is not to oe final; but peti- ! tions may bo renewed from time to time until their prayer is granted. Six members, elected by ratepayers, are
to constitute a Board. Batepayers to have from one to four votes each. Five members to retire annually. Board to appoint all officers, and make Bye Laws. The revenue is to consist of rates, tolls, (except on the Main any grants from a Provincial Council, or the Assembly, and 20 per cent of the Land fund where less than half the land is sold ; 25 per cent where three fourths is sold, and 30 per cent if three fourths is sold. This regulation is not to he applicable to Timaru or Gladstone. All bridges, roads, or ferries to be managed by the Board. The Superintendent may direct the Boards to construct Main Roads, and on refusal, construct them at the expense of the Board. The main roads made, all funds applicable to them can only be expended in repairs. The Minister is to report annually to the Assembly. The Governor may issue regulations to facilitate the work. Where the Superintendent has failed to act, the Governor may do so. The Maoris surprised a Redoubt at Waiki on Sunday morning the 12th, garrisoned by twenty-five treops. Six killed ; four have since died of their wounds. One hundred and eighty six Maori prison ers escaped from Chatham Islands, were landed by a Whaler at Poverty Bay, with their arms, and have entrenched themselves in a strong position. Great alarm exists. Her Majesty's ship, Rosario has gone to Poverty Bay. Waipara is chartered to follow, with a force from Napier. The Appropriation Bill haa passed
