"VVe are requested by Mr. R. Barlow, Secretary to the Dunstan District Hospital, to acknowledge tlie receipt of 51. 4s. fid. from the Rev. C S. Ross being the proceeds of a collection made after Divine Service held at the house of Mr. John Mellor, of Tinker's Gully, near Drybread. "VVe understand that the new Editor of the " Otago Daily Times " is Mr, G. B. Barton, late reader in English History at the Sydney University. MiBarton resigned his appointment purposely to undertake the dirties of his new office, which commenced <">n Saturday week last. An improvement in Ihe columns of our contempoiary is distinctly observable.
On Tuesday last the Rev. 0, Stuart Ross delivered a lecture at the School House, Clyde, for the benefit of the School Fund. The subject was, "The State of Learning in the Middle Ages" The attendance was both numerous and attentive, and the reverend gentleman did full justice to his subject. A meeting of rate-payers was held at Ryan,s Bendigo Ho+el, Alexandra, on Monday evening last, to take into consideration the coming election for Councillors. Mr. James Rivers was in the chair. The meeting was of a most desultory character, and no real business whatever was done. The whole of the plant and property of the Great Scandinavian Company, Skippers Reef, was sold on Saturday last by the Bailiif, under a writ of fi.fa., for the small sum of 400/ The original cost, and what has been spent upon the property, amounts to nearly 30,000/. A Chinese butcher has started busi. ness at Butcher's Gully, Alexandra. The Warden granted him a license on Monday last. It is said that, attracted by the high prices charged by the Barbarian Knights of the Cleaver for meat, Celestial Knights will enter the lists to contest for a division of the spoil. It will be seen by our advertising columns that Hack Races will be held on the Dunstan Course, on the sth proximo. On the fourth there will be pigeon shooting and other sports. In the matter of the Races no entrance money will be charged, excepting the sweepstakes. Captain Thomas Fraser has been appointed Deputy-Superintendent of the Province of Otage during the absence of his Honor the Superintendent and Mr. George Duncan, has been appointed Acting Provincial Treasurer for the Province of Otago during the absence of the Treasurer at Wei ington. It will be seen by our advertising columnsthatthcßev Father Williams will conduct Divine Worship on Sunday next, the 2Gth inst., at Cromwell; service morning and evening. We also understand that the same Rever- | end gentleman wi 1 visit the Cardrona : before returning to Clyde. The usual foi'tnightly meeting of I the Town Council (adjourned from the previous day) was held on Wednesday last. Present: the Mayor and Councillors M'Connochie, Cambridge, Ryan, ami Goodwin. The following letters were read and received :—From the Provincial Treasurer, to the effect that 200/. had been forwarded on account of subsidy ; from Messrs. Kennyon and Maddock, enclosing an account ; from the Secretary for Land and Works, informing the Council that the Government would proceed with the erection of the bridges across the Shotover and Manuherikia rivers as soon as they were in a position to do so; from Councillor Miaw, tendering his resignation ; from Mr. W. L. Bailey, protesting against the declared result of the election for Mayor. The resignation of Councillor Shaw was accepted. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to Mr. Bailey, informing him that his protest not having been served upon the Corporrtion in the manner prescribed by the Ordinance, the Council declined to entertain it. The following gentlemen were appointed Presiding Officers at the ensuing election of Councillors and Auditors : Messrs. M'Connochie, Cambridge, and S. M. Clarke.
